Blackstrap molasses as attractant?

Has anyone used blackstrap molasses to attract deer? If so, did you apply it to a grain or mineral block?

It's in COB which a lot of people use.  I imagine bears eat it up too so if you're wanting to bait deer in season then factor that.  Deer stop hitting pasture salt blocks when velvet is nearly gone.  Molasses has lots of salt in it so it might be a good attractant during spring/summer by itself.  Mixed with alfalfa, COB, or grass hay would probably be a better bet for season timeframes.

I’ve used feed molasses dripped on rock, stumps, and mineral blocks with mixed results.  Sometimes they seem to crave it but often it is ignored.

As for COB – they usually pick the corn out and leave the rest.

I have. Still haven't found anything they like better than corn in my area! That and 30/06 +protein from whitetail instatute.  For public land way in the back country I like the 30/06+p or trace mineral salt. Lasts a lot longer than bait but if it's any easy pack I love whole kernel corn

Thanks for the info! My idea was to spread corn and slop on some molasses. Used to do that on some private ground in CO while deer were wintering, they liked it then. Got a nice 3x4 blackie hitting my trace minerals right now and I want to keep him there until I can run an arrow through him.

Might have trouble convincing someone it's not bear bait… while you're at it you should try a couple hundred pounds brown sugar and stale marshmallows. Throw it all in a pile and set it on fire, the smoldering, smoky sweet smell should do the trick!

Smokey Bear might not like to seeing anyone setting anything on fire right about now as I am sure he would not assume a smoldering, smokey sweet smell should do the trick all thrown in a pile and set on fire! Sounds more like jail bait instead of convincing someone it was bear bait.

Please don't light anything out in the woods !! Heck for all that matters , don't even shut your car door hard that might light something, ive been using that record rack and the bears and dear are making it hard to keep up, maybe give that a try I couldn't find any fire combustion warning levels on it anywhere.

I can't get blacktails to hit anything other than apples for bait.
