electronic game caller
« on: July 09, 2015, 12:02:31 AM »
I have a western rivers game call.It uses 6 1.5 volt AA batteries. 9 volts,Dont know what the amps are.I want to use a bigger battery, what will a 12 volt battery that is regulated down to 9 volts do?Would it be ok or would it still have to many amps? Thanks for any help.

Amperage doesn't matter. It's only going to draw what it needs. If you think of your caller as a gas engine, the amps would be the gasoline and the battery would be the gas tank.

Not sure if this would work better for you or not, but you could mae a little battery pack by hooking 6 sets of AAs in serries and use as many of those as you want in parallel to give your 9v output a much longer life.  2 sets of six would double your capacity, 3 would tripple it, and so on.  Additionally, if you want to use rechargeable, you could use rechargeable AAs insteaad. Amd i think you can buy per made battery holders for your 6 in series on amason.

A couple of these and some standard snap connectors for 9v and you could give your call as you want. Run these all in parallel to get 9v no matter how many you link up. Just adds to the storage capacity. Amperage drawn depends on the device as long as the batrery you use is adequet. Your battery can supply too little, but you will never experience a battery deliverying too much current (amperage). Your device draws what it draws. The battery is just the resivoir that holds the power.
What is the purpose for this project? I assume you are just trying to avoid the batteries running low while you are in the middle of a calling session so you want to give it longer battery life?

I keep a half dozen of the multi AA packs for my callers, sometimes I don't have access to a charger for weeks and it is so much easier to just take a couple of 48 AA packages from Costco and change them out regularly.  I use up the nearly spent batteries in the LED lights in camp.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.
