Mt Baker bear hunting tips appreciated
« on: July 09, 2015, 04:39:36 PM »
Last year was my first year hunting bear.  I hunted 15 times at around 2000-2500 feet in elevation from Aug 1 to about September 15 on the South and North sides of Baker.  My last three times up I found a trail with berries and scat but never saw any bears.  This year I plan to hike in farther, maybe 2-3 miles from gates.  Any tips on date/elevation would be great.  I thought maybe it was a little too hot last year.  Thanks.

In earlier Aug. I find the surrounding areas where the higher creek draws begin and work my way down gradually.  If it is an area that provides ample berries along with a decent water supply, you are more likely to see something.  Also if you spot deer in the area, look real close for bear.  Seems like when it's hot they gravitate towards the same areas.  Back when I shot my first bear in that area, I noticed a deer grazing 60 yards away after I shot the bear.  You are probably not in the right area if you walking and your trousers are not stained with berry juice.

Get a predator call and learn how to use it. That works pretty well too. Call until you're blue in the face.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

Find where the food and water is at right now.  Then +3500' level and hit it hard, especially weekend of the 8th-9th this year.  Be in place long before daybreak.

I've heard of that book....see link below. Also, solid advice already given. However, I think baker is void of bears.... :chuckle:

I suspect those who have posted here, as have I, have passed and put the safety back on their rifles on quite a few bears already.
