What's it worth? 1965 Colt Python **pics added
« on: July 09, 2015, 09:02:29 PM »
I'm not sure I want to get rid of my Python but I am wondering what a fair price is. The gun is a 6" barrel Blued Python with original Colt grips from 1965. The wood grips are perfect. The gun has 99% blueing and has never been reblued. The ONLY mark on the entire gun is just below the cylinder release. It's 1/4" mark, thin as a hair. This gun has never seen a holster and doesn't have any wear. I have owned this for years and have fired exactly 6 rounds through it and it was awesome. Too nice to shoot and I'm not a collector.

Just wondering what your guys thoughts are on price.

Similar guns have went for $2500 + on gunbroker
"Shoot the spike".  It's much easier to pack out!

Usually those $2500 prices are for unfired new in box Pythons.  If yours is like you say but you don't have the box, I think a realistic price would be more in the $1500 range and that would be the high end.  If you have all the original stuff, box papers etc., that it came with, getting $1500 or a little more would be possible if you found the right person.

I bought a brand new 4in Python back around 1996.  For some reason, I just never got around to shooting it and after owning it a few years I almost forgot about it.  To this day it's never had a single round fired through it and by pure luck, I kept EVERYTHING it came with.  I even have the colt shipping cardboard box with the serial # on it the gun box came in.  I'll never sell that one.

When it comes to revolvers, IMO, there's nothing hotter looking than a 4 or 6 inch Colt Python!

I am going to say "right in between" the other two guys and go with right about $2K if the only wear sign is from the cylinder release as described. Now if it was Stainless.....  :twocents:

Here are a couple up on GB right now for about that price.

Would love to see a couple pics!

The second link of the 6" is comparable. However my royal blue is deeper and appears 'fresher'. My Python has the previous generation wood grip with the half circle stippling around the colt symbol.

I will post some pictures tomorrow.

This picture is not my actual gun, just pulled from the web showing my exact model/grip.

Not easy to do a direct comparison, but using the inflation calculator - you paid back then about what you would pay now for the same thing!
Although I guess the travel trailer would be worth less than 2K now?   8)

What cost $425 in 1973 would cost $2233.98 in 2014.
Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 2014 and 1973,
they would cost you $425 and $77.35 respectively.

I saved for that gun too. I know I paid a lot for it then, because even then, I knew what it was. The travel trailer was a 1968 TERRY if I remember correctly.... :'( :'(

You own it,its worth what you say its worth.fact is if its as good as a new one its worth about the same as a new one simple as that.every time i look into this question myself, thats the answers i get from the dealers of collectibles.  :twocents:It is also said that if you shoot it you shoot it no loss to value,if its Like a john wayne replica rifle its worth about the same as any other rifle of the same model unless it was used by someone famous. The numbers dont really matter either unless you have like the first one made and it was given to a specific person like chief of police, prison warden, actor or something like that.  :twocents:
You must first be honest with yourself,Until then your just lying to everyone.

Very nice!!!

Unless you just need to sell it, I'd keep it forever and pass it on to someone you felt would appreciate it, at least, as much as you do.

And for what it's worth, I realllllllly appreciate these things so if you'd like to pass it on to me, just pm me and I'll send you the address of my FFL.  :chuckle:

That is a beautiful piece! I would never sell it if it was mine. But I know what you mean about having it and not shooting it..... If you do sell it, make sure to post it here first so we can all get a chance at it.
