Had an 8 year Westside branched bull streak going but finally ate my 2013 tag,but got a cow last year so im starting a new run.

Just not very much access to private land in WA, ID or OR.  So I would assume the vast majority of those posting on here would be DIY Public.  Elk are a lot different than whitetails or even ag-mulies.  Even large private ranches in Utah, Montana, CO and NM you have to be careful not to push the elk off the private land.  Doesn't take much!

I used to hunt the Yale a lot.  After about three days of guys Rambo hunting and Russian Tourette bugling probably 60-70% of the elk would escape to the Toutle.   In those small areas it just doesn't take much!  Most of the elk we killed were hell bent for the Toutle running north away from the Russians.  If you didn't ambush them on their way out you were lucky to see them again before muzzy season started.

Then of course we had all those great years hunting the Winston migration.  That was dang near a gimme until they took our bulls away and attempted to slaughter all the cows!  Now hoof rot is doing the rest.

There were a lot more elk on the Oregon coast when I was growing up too.  Prior to the spotted owl and the marbled murrelet scams clear cutting was wide spread and forage was extremely rich for coastal elk.  Now you fly over areas I hunted and there is no feed to be found anywhere!  As a result elk numbers have plummeted!  What elk are left are concentrated right along with all the hunters.  But at least the little birds are nesting happy

So you young guys really do have it a bit tougher than us more mature guys   Nothing hard work, good planning and being smart can not overcome.  But no doubt tougher than it used to be!

went 5 year's in a row archery, then stopped elk hunting wa when they made the season earlier, getting back after it this year though

All of mine have been diy, public land and over half have been solo (hunt and pack out).

Oooo!!!!  I'd like to get a WA "Quality Bull" tag some day before I die. 

Though I usually feel luckier buying PowerBall and Mega Millions tickets than I do applying for WDFW Quality anything.
