Grizz Precision CZ 527 264 LBC

I finally got a chance to go out with my new CZ 527 in 264 LBC that Grizz Precision built for me. It was a project for my son which just happens to be exactly what I would build for myself if I were looking for a light weight pack rifle.
It started as a CZ 527 in 7.62x39. That would have been a pretty good package to begin with, but the range is a little limited. So, it went off to Grizz Precision for a quick face lift and a new barrel. What I got back was better than I had hoped for. The new barrel is a 19" Blackhole in 264 LBC that closely matches the contour of the factory barrel. The scope is a VX 3 1.5-5x. The idea behind the low power scope was to keep the weight down. It looks like the scope sits too high but it's perfect for snap shooting off hand.


Even with the 5x scope it shoots extremely well with factory ammo. This 2" group is 3 shots at 289 yards. The large circle above the group is the outline of a clay pigeon. The cross hairs on the scope completely cover that circle at 289 yards so it's a little tricky getting a consistent point of aim.


As much as I want to keep the weight of the gun down, I think I'm going to end up mounting a slightly higher power scope on there just to do justice to the accuracy of the gun. I do hate the thought of ruining the 7# 2oz weight of the scoped rifle though.

The best part was how excited Xavier was when he got to shoot it. I've been telling him for a while that I would have a gun built for him that wasn't as big, heavy, or loud as the rest of mine. He's fallen in love with my 6mm BR rifle but it's pretty heavy at about 9.5#. The little CZ is just the right size and weight for him. Not to mention that it may be the perfect rifle to pack around on a high buck hunt this September if I can pry it out of his hands.

What does that scope weigh? Leupold has the 2x7x28mm Ultralight that is 8.5 oz or the 3x9x33mm at 11.5 oz. that I have been looking at for an ultralight setup. I was planning on doing a Savage Lightweight Hunter in 6.5 creedmore, one of those scopes in a set of Talley ultralight one piece rings. On paper should be a sub 7lb package but doesn't come close to that rifle in classy looks. I love the look of Stainless and Wood. Nice set up.

I had to spend about 1/2 hr on the inletting. Other than that nothing. I just screwed the barrel on, verified headspace and shot it. It still has factory bedding in the recoil lug area.

The barrel was a prototype of a profit system we are going to offer soon. I'm very pleased how that turned out.

I like low power scopes.  Use a four dot target and just center the crosshairs between the dots equally.  You will be amazed at how much better you group.  I like to take the targets to a print shop and have larger copies made for my 300+ distances.

I normally have some of the 4 square targets for when I'm shooting my hunting guns, I just spaced out this time. I may throw a higher power scope on there just to see what I can really get done with this rifle and some good handloads. I do have an NXS 5.5-22x56 sitting in the safe that needs a good home. That would nearly double the weight of the gun though!

The only thing really missing from the mini chassis is a magazine big enough to fit a larger diameter case. I'll working on that now though.

I've been thinking seriously about doing a 7.62x39 down to .257 in a Mini Mauser as they are back on the market again.  It will be awhile as I already have a 25-204 that does just about the same thing.  It works well on deer.



I like the low power variables most of my coyote guns, I have 1.5-6x40mm scopes on the bolt actions and my combo guns all have 1-4x20mm scopes good to 300 easily.

That's funny. I just keep thinking of necking the case up to 338!
