Sockeye tips
«
on:
July 14, 2015, 06:05:51 AM »
I'm new to salmon fishing in general but we have really been trying to get into it more this year. I have some questions in general but also lake Wenatchee specific.
We are fishing from a boat do we need down riggers or will added weight suffice?
From what I've read a size 0 dodger with 12" of 25lb test leader attached to a pink hoochie is a decent setup? Any other setups that work better?
What line weight should I use at a minimum for sockeye from a down rigger? What about without a down rigger?
Obviously trolling where your fish finder says there is fish is the right depth but do you find a common depth when trolling or does it change often?
Again, this is new to us, so any tips you have via here or pm would be awesome.
Thanks

Skip the hoochie and just use 2 bare red hooks.
Downriggers are best, 25lb mono works best in the clips.

2 bare red hooks? Like no bait no scent? They still bite that?

I used to fish them a ton (when you could ) . we would run a chrome flasher and about 20-24 inch leader with a u20 flat fish either bright red or gold . down riggers are good but often just ran a 5/6 oz wieght a couple feet in front of the flasher. the key was as slow as you could go just enough speed to watch the tip of your rod bump and the gear not to tangle . kicking in and out of gear was another trick to get a strike . i know guys went to the red hooks behind the flasher with good results but i liked the flat fish. play with leader length i know some guys run 10 to 12 inches behind the flasher with bare hooks .

I use a dodger, size 0 or 00, and a hoochie, 20lb line on downriggers. I fish one rod off the back of the boat with a 3oz bananna weight 10'' above the dodger. I also like a good kokanee/sockeye scent. Good luck!!
