Because, perhaps I need a new gun and don't know it yet.

I just did this for b23 and I'm pretty sure his wife put a contract out on my head lol. Anyways there a couple scenarios were an extra firearm could come in handy.

My friend, you don't know the half of it!!

I completely sent her over the edge last week when I bought a new G20 Gen4 from Carpsniper.

I promised I'd stop looking for awhile but my "awhile" really just means I'm not looking at anymore, today! 😉

Have you tried asking for the new safe yet :)

Lots of good suggestions here guys. I think with the voting and what will fit my needs it looks like the Mossberg 500 wins. I also may look into the folding stock idea, I just never found one I really liked that was compact AND comfortable to shoot.

Oh yes!  In fact its been a bit of a conversation piece in my house for awhile now.  You wanna know what she had the "nerve" to suggest to me, ya, she told me maybe I should sell a few things then I'd have more room in the safe I currently have and wouldn't need a new one.  I, kindly, suggested she talk to her Dr. about getting an MRI or CAT scan because I think she done slipped the cheese off her cracker or something.  I mean that's just crazy talk, sell stuff to make room, rrrright!  Like that's ever gonna happen.  I keep waiting for the "right" opportunity to tell her I'm one of the first names on the waiting list for the new Sig SRD 45 suppressor.  I've been keeping a bag packed so make sure you keep that spare bedroom ready for me, I may need it.

I just happen to have a Mossberg 835 just like this one http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Mossberg-835-Ulti-Mag-Thumbhole-Turkey-Shotgun&i=416700  that is unfired NIB that I'd make you a smoking good deal on.  And if you bought it, maybe I wouldn't need that spare bedroom for awhile.  :chuckle:

PM me and I can text or email you some actual pics if you'd like.

Dude, get yourself one of those Mechtech uppers for that. You can swap them back and forth and the 10mm is a screamer with a 16" barrel.

Other.

Stick with my sidearm and extra mags in that scenario.  Concealable and low-profile.   If I end up walking, I would rather be more mobile and inconspicuous than armed for crowd control or intermediate range engagements.

If we are talking WWIII, end of the world, stick with a standard AR or other battle rifle.

Hence Parameter #4: Discretion. All these guns listed can fit in a small bag or even be concealed under a jacket.

The AR crossed my mind but like I said this will be with you 100% of the time. the odds of me ever needing it are slim, but the odds of me getting in a car accident over 30+ miles one way are actually statistically higher. If I were to get into an accident I would rather have a $250 Mossberg get destroyed over a $2000 AR.

When I pondered this question a few years ago my situation was this. I worked for a large aerospace company and my location was in the Duwamish area of Seattle . My company had a strict policy of no firearms in vehicles on company property. I envisioned a scenario where I would be at work and an earthquake would hit and all transportation routes to my home 35 miles south would be disrupted. I would have to walk and possibly fight my way through a disaster area to get home. I had to have a firearm I could readily conceal effectively in my rig and yet be available for a SHTF event. I chose to conceal my large frame Springfield XD .45 in a hidden compartment in my truck along with hiking boots and a pack with enough ammo, water  and gear to last for a few days to get me home. With several 13 rd mags at hand, I figured I could defend all but a genuine zombie apocalypse.
The only arm on the list that might have been considered is the mares leg .44 mag. At least I could somewhat conceal that under a jacket.

I dont keep a rifle in my truck for the purpose of a "get home gun" but if things ever did go that way I'd be walking home with a Ruger .308 carbine. Easy enough to hide in whatever truck I'm driving that day.

I would either go   really cheep, Mossburg, or some kind of carbine that accepted the same mags i carry and same ammo. When you cant have a lot of anything double duty is important.  :twocents:

My vote is for a .300 blk pistol. Very accurate with a 10.5" barrel and can be built fairly cheap.  Throw a Sig "arm brace" on it and you basically have a legal SBR.

I've never heard the term Get Home Gun before. But I'm not really a gun guy (seriously). I think you need to own 2 dozen or more to be a 'gun guy'... I ain't there... yet :chuckle:

Any cheap long gun you'll take will be money better spent than a long gun you'll leave at home. I think a shotgun has great versatility given the ability to selectively load buckshot, birdshot, or slugs, with salt and pepper to taste.

The extra capacity of an AR is nice, as well as a rail system for adding lights and lasers. But then again if its dark out, you can more easily break contact and escape the situation. you may wind up fighting at close range. A plain basic shotgun will most likely be just fine. Make sure you either add a bandoleer with rounds, or a sling that holds extra rounds, or at least the spandex round carrier that stretches over the stock. Or you can make a little mini bug out bag to go with it that has some basic trauma supplies and extra rounds.
