10/22 build
«
on:
January 09, 2009, 12:00:35 PM »
Well with the talk of 22's on here I figured I would start my 10/22 build. I have finally found a stock I liked and I'm not sure about the barrle yet. The stock is a revolution stocks trailblazer in either cayenne, fire n ice, or woodland camo. I want a helical or snake fluted barrle in either stainless or blued, I have figured out what company I want to get it from yet.

Check out Boyd's gun stocks before you buy a stock. They have inletted stocks that you finish your self. Saves you lots of money. I bought one several years ago and finished it myself. I even sold it for twice what I paid for it. I ended up just opening up the barrel channel on a factory stock and sticking my bull barrel in it.

I like boyd stocks but they don't make one like the one above. I dont care much for thumb hole stocks and that's all they make for the 10/22. Fajen makes one but it has a skinny forend, and all the other companies I have looked at make thumb hole stocks of synthetic stocks. If I cant get the one above then it would be one of the following

I have thought about going with the volquartsen trigger group but wont have the cash. I might do the target trigger parts, and I want the CNC bolt.If I get a good return this year I will get all this
or
I have seen the tactical solutions barrels make some very nice groups but I want a longer barrel and I'm not sure about the colors yet. I know that the ER Shaw barrels look nice and so do the volquartsen barrels but they are spendy and I don't want a bentz chamber because I plan on shooting CCI stingers and velociters out of my gun and the bentz chamber isnt a good match for that.

I though about doing that but I dont think the ground squirrels and other prey will mind the nice stock and barrel.

get rid of the bolt stop pin and install a buffer too...cheap and good for long term life of the rifle.

If it were me doing a build (oh wait, I am!) here is the list of "first thing" to do's:
1. Bolt Buffer (just about any brand, I prefer weaponcraft)
2. Targer Hammer (Rimfire technologies #1, VQ #2)
3. Polish engagement surfaces on factory sear and disconnector
(You know have a sub #2.5lb, crisp trigger).
4. Remove trigger return plunger and tap hole for overtravel screw, notch top of factory trigger and install $0.32 torsion spring from Ace Hardware.
MUCH SMOOTHER TRIGGER!
5. You can now drill/tap a set screw in the factory disconnector to take up any pre-travel if you like...
#6. Barrel
...just stay away from Butler Creek.
GM (Green Mountail) makes very accurate barrels at a very low cost. Beyond that, you're paying for a name, custom length, or "fancy" flutes.
There are a few guys that will set-back and rechamber a factory barrel with a bentz chamber for a reasonable cost--and they will shoot as good or better than most aftermarket barrels! A great alternative if you want a "stock" look.
#7. Stock
I won't even touch on this as they are so darn many on the market in so many variations. Just know some thumbhole stocks on the market are VERY uncomfortable to shoot off-hand, and are best left on the bench.
From here, there are about 50 billion other things you could do...
Rather than buying an aftermarket bolt, send you factory unit to Randy at CPC and have him re-work it. He wil pin the firing pin, jewel the bolt, square and headspace, and reshape the rear of the bolt for ~$60 and you will be just as good (or better) than an aftermarket piece.
I'm a realy 22lr junky, and have built a few 10/22s in the past few years.
I'm building my last two currently, as I will NOT buy any of the new Ruger 10/22's since the bolts are now MIM'd, the trigger groups are all molded plastic, the receivers are "krinkle painted" which chips and flakes too easily, and the hammer has been re-designed (and stinks!).
My local Big 5 happened to have two old-model, all aluminum 10/22's on the rack and I scarfed them up as soon as they went on sale.

If you go with a bull barrel you will want to get a v-block with an elevation screw.
The stock alumuminum receiver isn't strong enough to support a 20" .920 tube.
There is a guy in Island county that makes them...can't remember his name.
Another guy in or around Blaine that markets some parts.
The v-block is hardened so you have to anneal it and re-temper if you try to do it yourself.
