Since the outlawing of running dogs I dont think you have to travel very far to hunt Cougars. Likely you need to read up on some of the posts on here about calling in bobcats and cougars. You have to wait much longer than for coyotes, hunt in pairs, Shot gun/long gun and pick good spots to call with visibility.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Probably the easier question to answer these days is "Where are there no cats?"  Dang creatures are raising hell every where I used to hunt.  I'm getting tired of seeing cows with no calves, doe with no fawns and cougar + bear plans that have no plan at all.  We need longer seasons, no quotas and an OTC spring bear season again!

That was my next question

What to use to call them in any smells, game calls. I'll try and find the other posts on calling them in

Sounds like my house.  Had one doe left with both fawns but she lost both over the last couple weeks.  Now i just have a ton of adult deer, and just one doe with one fawn.  Ill be shocked if it makes it through the summer.

Seeing the lack of fawns this year in the NE is frustrating.  There are plenty down in the fields in lots of places but up in the mountains I am not seeing as many as I usually see on camera.

I have seen a good amount of elk calves in a few specific areas though so that's good.

It seems like there are units on the east side that have a lot of kitties, how about on this side

Cook...look up a members thread from last year.....Sled is his name. He popped a cat while out bear hunting. I think his hunt and story depict a pretty good example of how some get shot. Pretty much right place right time.

Anywhere there are deep dark woods, there are cats.  Nobody really targets them since hound hunting is outlawed so I wouldn't expect much accurate info.

Hit the woods and cold call, look for tracks in the winter snow.

I'll tell you what, that was an awesome experience.  Probably never happen again.  Only help I can give is spend time in the woods as much as you can, and stuff your pack with as much luck as you can!
Good luck!

When in Oregon there never was even a draw opportunity on the coast.  I'd stalk within 30 yards of a couple every year!  Really hard to pass them up when all our blacktail were disappearing.  Called in a good number of them here in Washington while varmint or turkey hunting.  Never once during an open season though.

I've eaten cougar and bobbies a few times.  Good stuff!  Haven't had a lot but never a tough piece of meat.

so what did you use to call them in?

Usually turkey calls and double reed extra raspy cottontail calls.  One during bear calling with a double reed extra raspy jack call using long breath calling with no shake.

I would contact rainshadow1 for cougar sounds and cougar calling.  I see a lot of cats in 117,121,113,

Fawn distress, elk calf distress, any kind of cow talk and cougar vocals will get you a response. That's not nessasarily the hard part. Hard part is seeing them before they see you. I've called in a few cats sofar and only one could I see first. Unfortunetly I had already tagged a tom that year so I had to let it walk.  Good luck

What gets me are the quotas... seems like they don't allow that many in areas that you might actually see one...How many can we harvest in William Creek, compared to Republic? ?
