I was thinking leather.  My buddy recommends the danner pronghorn, but I don't like boots that big.  I usually just wear romeo's but they suck in steep terrain and in cold weather.


These Merrell's is what I was thinking and they are definitely more in my price range.

Don't buy the Merrils their quality in the last several years has been severely lacking.  If you want a boot in close to the same price range that will hold up try out the Vasque St. Elias.  I would recommend trying anything on before you buy it though boots fit each person a little different, and opinions on comfort can be all over the board.

I hate my pronghorns! Most uncomfortable boot I've ever owned. I even bought those fancy $70 inserts to try to help. Buy whatever you like, but fair warning.

Been looking at the Irish Setter (Red Wing) Elk Trackers. Tried them on in Sportsman's and they felt pretty good. Just wonder if they are waterproof enough.....

I have the Irish setter elk trackers 600 mg gortex. I love them, I wear them with smart wool socks and never have had issues with getting wet unless I go over the top. The break in period was about two days.

I have a pair of the Irish Setter Elk Trackers for sale listed in the classified section if anyone is interested.  They are great boots but don't fit my foot well.  Everyone is different.  I have also ponied up for the Kennetrek but they didnt work for me either.  I'm now on to Zamberlan and so far so good.

just got a pair of keens dry waterproof.  they seem to walk well.  had them on 2 different 5 milers and so far I like them.   time will tell.    mike w

I went to cabelas today and tried some different boots on.  I actually hated the pronghorn's, but really enjoyed the danner high ground 400mg boot.  Super comfy and fit my foot.

Danner Pronghorns are great if you're hunting pronghorn on the flat prairie where it doesn't rain.
I wouldn't bother wasting money on them based on reviews on here.

My Dad has a set of those moon boots, I borrowed them on several occasions to go steelhead fishing when I was younger, Wish you could still find them... Be nice in a stand...

Yes they are.
I bought a pair and hunted them maybe 30 days.
Last year, I noticed my feet were wet after walking through a wetland.
I took them to the Danner store where they immediately showed me the soles cracked across the arches.
Both of them.
Turns out, it's pretty common....Took them no time to show me.

My Made-in-USA replacements from Danner are not a good fit...Completely different from their offshore boots.
I bought a pair of Vasque hikers on Amazon last year.
Nice boots.
I prefer taller boots for hunting but the Vasques are nice.

I  bought a  pair of keen Ketchum and have probably 100 miles on them  walking through sloped  forest ground.. they have been great and my feet feel massaged  all day..  how well they will do in steep rocky terrain may be a different  story..   The only thing I do not like  about them is that  some of the outside  detailing on the  side  near the sole is made of a  soft  foam material and it gets ripped up in the brush  so  far it's been cosmetic..

it  was  a hard  choice  for me between them and the danners.. the pronghorn feels like heaven on my feet as did the  east ridge.. the  highground hurt just putting them on.   I  got a  good  deal on the Keens  so i bought them and  do not regret it..

if  you hunt on the  west  side a lot  your feet  are  gonna get wet  no matter what  you  wear...

Danner Rivot tfx gtx. Most comfortable boot I've ever worn. Plus this is one of the few Danner models still made in the USA. Much better quality then their boots made in China.

Bingo- hunting partner turned me on to military boots, starting to wear my 2nd set around the house now so they will be ready for september. Hundreds of miles on my first pair and they are still going strong, 2nd set is just for back-ups...

I have half a dozen pairs of Danner boots that are completely shot, soles look like racing slicks, I typically can wear a set out in one year of National Guard training. If I buy a new pair before Summer AT I can make them work through hunting season but by the next summer they are trashed. I hate them for hunting boots and would not recommend them to anyone. You would do far better to buy a quality hunting boot and wear them for just that, maybe buy two pairs and rotate them depending on your budget. Everyone will have their own preference though. For me, if I could get away with it I wouldn't wear normal combat boots for military stuff either, I would find something with a stronger more aggressive sole and better arch and ankle support.

Keen sandals and boots are the most comfortable things I've had on my feet for years! The only problem I had with my keen boots was the lacing loops were all made of fabric and they got torn up from some of the rocky areas I frequent. Returned them and won't buy another pair of their boots until they change that design.

I am a lifelong Danner wearer.  Their China made crap is just that CRAP.  I personally have never had a bad pair of USA made Danners and they are very comfortable to me.  I've tried a few others but keep coming back to the Danner Canadians or rainforests.
