Pack Snacks
« on: July 21, 2015, 08:34:35 AM »
As a follow up to the main meal thread, whaddya you cats carry for your pack snacks for the day?  I pre-pack all my daily snacks (including an Erin Baker Bfast cookie) in a quart zip lock before season and just throw one in my pack each night for the next day's hunt.  Probably gonna try some new stuff this year but last year I carried a combination of the following in the zip lock:

MRE style bread with Jif to go PB packet and Honey or Jelly packets X 2, or, Tuna Creations packet
Plastic spoon to spread gunk on bread
Three (one of each) Luna bar, Honey Stinger, Sweet and Salty granola bar (the luna bars were getting pretty old by the end of SEPT)
A few packs of snack crackers (cheese, PB, etc.) and/or cookies
Six or seven little snickers bars

Whaddya you guys carry for your day snacks in your pack?

Here's my basic load to cover all my hunts for last season.

Looks like you are on an eating trip, not a hunting trip  :chuckle:

I'm good with a snickers and some Jerky, maybe a bit of trail mix

I carry a lot of homemade jerky on longer trips.  Got to have carbs in the backcountry though or you feel like you're wasting away  :bdid:

Granola bars, cheese crackers, anything reasonably tasty with lots of calories and I'll eat it.  Cliff bars, almonds, candy bars etc.  Those little Tiger Milk bars hit the spot too.

Homemade Jerky!!!!!!

I'll usually pack some trail mix, dried apples or pears, Nature Valley dry granola bars (best place to eat them is outdoors because of the damn crumbs!) and some type of cracker sandwich thing for carbs.  Sometimes I steal some of my kids fruit snacks too  :chuckle:

My snacks include just the basics but since diversity is the spice of life I tend to mix them up with each other

Spam
Bbq Pringles
Stinger waffles ( honey & chocolate )
Stinger energy shots ( honey & chocolate usually  )

With that il make...

Spam & Pringles
spam & honey energy shot
Spam & honey waffle sandwich
honey waffle & chocolate energy shot sandwich (or vise versa ).....

Or i eat them separately

That's typical September, October & November I ditch the energy shots & spam and start packing homemade jerky & pepperoni

Meat snacks will fill you up but when you have two drainages to navigate to get to the elk, it's nice to have a couple candy bars and a Clif Bar  :twocents:

I am constantly eating when I am out hunting so probably half of my pack weight is food.  :chuckle:

My typical gallon ziplock bag has:

-2 cliff bars
-fruit snacks
-pbj
-shredded chicken wrap
-sunflower seeds
-jerky
-small fruity candy like starbursts or jolly ranchers. I like these because when I am hiking a steep hill or something, they help me from getting cotton mouth and drinking all my fluids.

In the NE, whenever I find an apple tree I usually waste about 20 minutes eating the sour little things.  Something about the taste of a fresh wild apple, even the sour ones I can eat a bellyful.

I'll fill a pack with those when afforded the opportunity.

My snacks tend to vary but mostly right on with what everyone else has said. For any sandwich or bread type items, I pack bagels. They can get smashed and not make your sandwich explode in to a giant mess when I pull it out of a Ziploc

When I am making a regular bread sandwich, I toast my bread before I make them so that it helps keep it from getting soggy as well as keeping its structure in my pack.

I also appreciate my sand in the shape of a sand  ;).  I carry spreadables (tuna creations, Jif to Go PB and honey/jelly packets, etc.) and spread it onto MRE bread when it's time for the big mid day meal.  The MRE bread isn't that bad, particularly the wheat bread. With the exception of long lasting salami or something of that nature, I do not have perishables at hand for many/most of my hunts (ham, cheese, roast beast, chicken, etc.) so it's all pre-packaged, lightweight, no cooling required, backpack friendly foods.

I don't pack a ton of carbs, just like I don't eat high carbs at home.  If your body is adjusted to burning fat, it isn't an issue.

I also don't eat much backcountry, I just don't seem to have the appetite and am always busy doing something else.  For snacks, I would usually have some type of protein bar, jerky and salty nuts.  The added bonus is that they are energy dense, don't weigh much and don't take up much space.

I used to try to get 2-3k calories a day, but you end up hauling a 7-11 up in the woods and I ended up bringing half of it back.

Salami and pepper jack.  FTW.  No mess, packs well, travels well, eats like a filet mignon after a day of tromping around in the cold and wet.

That is me but I usually end up wishing I packed more and rationing my last few snacks in the late afternoon evening. Darn metabolism.  :chuckle:

Good ideas to choose from in this post.  For me my gallon bag has at least one of the following menu items in it, all stuff that I can keep in my camper pantry for a while:

- (Meat) Beef Jerky, Vienna Sausage, Kipper Snacks, or Sardine can (hard to find ketchup sauce or tomato one anymore?)
- (Carbs) Combos or dollar store crackers, chicken, vegetable, cheese, etc., Ritz cracker roll, sandwich crackers
- (Drink) Kool-Aide packets for 16 oz. container of water and/or Emergency packet
- (Candy) Hot Tamales, Snickers type bars
- (Other) beans and weenies can, Smokehouse almonds nut can

Also take a genuine MRE with heater pack as well, but usually do not need it for one day outing.

My daily routine is as follows:
0-dark thirty coffee and a granola bar
10:00 Granola bar or energy bar
1:00 potted meat wrap
8:30-9:00 back at camp eat freeze dried meal

Last year I made wraps using potted meat with sirracha (not quite sure what the hell potted meat is made of...pretty sure I don't want to) and put in vacuum bags.  The potted meat is decent, loaded with salt, calories, and fat (all that you need when out in the back country).  The vacuum bag kept them fresh however the flour tortilla became a little mushy but not bad (goes in almost the same as it goes out  :chuckle:).  This year I'm going to roll them, toast them in a pan, chill and bag'em.

As for other stuff, I bring nature valley bars, coffee (starbucks instant packs), energy bars other than cliff...suckers become bricks if it gets cold out!  Besides I can only handle the taste of them for one day after which I prefer eating bark.

Similar to the author of this post I vacuum bag everything per day so that I don't have to worry about open food and it is easier.

Typical day of food for me elk hunting would be 2 packs oatmeal for breakfast, quest or power crunch bar and cashews about 9am, jerky and home made protein bars (ingredients below) with yogurt covered raisins for lunch, another bar and dried fruit about 4pm, and this year will be home made freeze dried meals for dinner (1200 cals, 15-20g fat, 100g carbs, 60g protein.

Homemade bars ingredients:

-Peanuts
-Cashews
-dark choc chips
-dried cranberries/cherries
-orange or lemon zest
-honey

Chop in a food processor, pack into wax papered pan and freeze for 30 mins. Flip pan upside down onto a cutting board and cut bars to size, vacuum pack into 2 bar packs.

Salami and cheese are the bomb.  Every time I eat it in the woods, the only thing I can think about is that it must be one of the absolute top ways to attract bears.  I can smell that stuff on my hands for the rest of the trip.

I'm leaving for a 3 day backpacking trip tomorrow. I have the following:

6 Oatmeal
3 carnation instant breakfast
6 nature valley G bars
2 Packs of Homemade Jerky
4 Mountain house freeze dried meals.
Trail mix
Flask with Whiskey
Water

I think i'll be good to go. I got some fat to burn if that does not hold me.

I love those Austin Lemon Ohs pictured in the OP!  Too bad you only get two in a whole box of crappy fake Oreos >:(

If talking snacks I like - Doritos, jerky, Tillamook teriyaki sticks, Premier protein bars, Costco mixed nuts in the little tubes, dried papaya, kippers, Ritz peanut butter sandwiches and...big surprise...homemade peanut butter cookies :chuckle:  Nutter Butters will work in an emergency ;)

If it is cold enough to take a candy bar I like Payday and Dark Mars better than Snickers!  I'm with Jonathan_S, Snickers seem a little too sweet.

Snickers for sure, and it's the only time I eat them throughout the year as well.  Started also packing these small boxes of tuna salad with crackers, light and makes a good snack. Jerky and peanut butter n jelly for sure, I love it when the jelly is all smashed up after a couple days in the pack.

Trail mix, clif builder bars and some regular ones. Bagel, peanut butter, honey, bacon sandwiches, an apple or two. Sometimes jerky. Dried fruit or fruit snacks. Gotta mix it up from time to time.

Ask anyone who has hunted with me, I live on snickers bars while hunting.

Crazy thing is thats the only time of year I eat them.

I know someone who eats a ton while hunting.  One year he forgot his TP and used the wrappers!!!!

I just grab a store rotisserie chicken pull and shred mix taco seasoning & olive oil
Place 1/2 slice cheese ( I like tillamook pepper jack ) and add about 2.5 oz chicken wrap tight and vac seal
This place protected by God and Guns trespass and you might get to meet Both !
