Trash game.
« on: July 21, 2015, 04:06:00 PM »
I took my dogs (all 4 hounds) out for a walk the other evening to get some exercise and enjoy a sunset.  Of course, I forgot to collar them and was walking across a big shrub steppe area when they all blew up and were baying something.  I ran over there figuring it was going to be a coyote pup or something, but it turned out to be a SUPER mad badger.  He was rushing them and really wanting a fight, but they stayed clear. I managed to call them all back without anyone getting bit.  It got me thinking about all the ridiculous game my dogs have trashed on.  I thought it might be fun to make a list or make a little contest of it  :o

So far I have had dogs strike or trash on:

1)badger
2)coyote
3)skunk
4)painted turtle... (good story over beers) :dunno:
5)elk
6)deer
7)moose
8)mountain goat
9)porcupine
10)turkey

They have just about covered everything....I'm sure they are 100% broke now!

Other hounds!  :dunno:
I had a few dogs that I knew were striking something that wasn't right. I finally figured out they were striking every time I crossed roads where another hound dogger had driven through!

Grouse  :chuckle:
Years ago we would shoot grouse when bear hunting. I finally figured out that shooting grouse in front of the dogs made them start striking grouse! I stopped doing that!  :chuckle:

I've had numerous dogs that I never could completely break off skunks and porkies, there's just something about those two critters that sets dogs off.

Owning hounds always has surprises!  :chuckle:

My lab 30 years ago would not leave a porky alone! Zero learning curve on that hardheaded guy. Spent a weekend at a Selah vet with quills in his tongue, throat and muzzle. Also loved skunk, didnt help grandma fed them at the back slider like cats.

Ohhhh, yeah that pig would have sucked.  I suspect the farmer was unpleased.

I heard of a buddies dog trashing on the buffalo up on the Kalispel Rez.  :o
