Where can we borrow/rent a hunting firearm?
« on: July 22, 2015, 02:47:35 PM »
Hi fellows hunters,

I’m getting ready for this hunting season to go for the first time to hunt Mule deer in October. But I’m missing the number one piece of equipment, a rifle. I’m currently in the process of importing my very own firearm from Canada but the schedule looks too tight and I may be already too late to get it on time for this season… There’s a very big chance it got here after the hunting season.

So, I’m looking for a good plan B. Do you know where I could borrow/rent a rifle for this hunting season? If possible, I would like to take possession of it a couple weeks before my departure date so I can go try it out before and get used to it.

Since those information could be useful to other fellow hunters, I thought it would be a good idea to post it here.

@Admins: feel free to move into the right section if this is not the right place.

Thank you!

who are you hunting with? Do they have an extra that you could use? If you are going with an outfitter, they often will have one that you could use.

Yep....what he said.

Hate to say it but I think the best way to get by is to head out, by a basic ready to go setup that will shoot minute of mule deer and keep it as your backup. I've got an H&R slug gun that I've loaned out but that is a very inexpensive gun to someone I know personally. You have the time to get a backup/replacment AND get it ready to go.

Hope it works out and good luck and be safe.

Buy a used rifle, then  sell it after your hunt. Here are a couple of good options:

Unless the firearm owner is with you while hunting, renting or loaning would constitute the illegal transfer of a firearm in WA.
Isn't that still the law?????

Not if they completed a legal transfer.

Also I don't see anything where the OP mentions about going with an outfitter.

All that said, I've never heard of anywhere where you can rent a rifle for hunting. Borrowing one from someone will be tough. I wouldn't loan any of my rifles to anyone I didn't know for multiple reasons. No offense intended.

You can loan a firearm, it just would require a trip to the nearest gun dealer to do the paperwork/background check.

Of course, the Washington State Patrol is on record with their interpretation of the law being that a loan is NOT a transfer and no background check is required.   :dunno:

I just asked the question about an outfitter because it sounds like he just moved to the state and unless he knows people that gave him a place to hunt, an outfitter would be a viable option

Do you have American citizenship and are you otherwise not a prohibited possessor?

That's kind of the first step in the WA nannystate keep lawful citizens from enjoying firearms flowchart.

Thank for all your answers!

First, I'm not a American citizen but I requested the Alien Firearm license. Which gives a non-immigrant alien the right to possess firearms only if he proves it will be for hunting purpose or if he's a member of a shooting club.

@jackelope, I perfectly understand why you would not loan one of your firearm to someone you don't know.

@2labs, 594 may be a problem, like you said. Need to check it out.

@vandeman17, I'm planning to go on public land with one of my buddies which will simply accompany me (won't hunt). No outfitter

@bobcat, yes buying and reselling it is a potential option I was already considering. But with 594 it may force me to sell it back to a gun shop and obviously they won't pay the full/real cost of it since they want to do some profit. It's perfectly fine with me except if it's a ridiculous difference. I've no idea what would be the difference between the cost at purchase vs the price reselling it back to a gun shop. Does anyone could give me a rough idea?

@MountainWalk and @bobcat, thanks for your offer and will consider them when I'm done collecting all the info and other solutions.

I had a chat with some other folks and they proposed me to start archery hunt. It may actually be a good idea. I've been a crossbow hunter (moose) for 2-3 years and looking to borders importation laws on crossbows and WA rules during modern firearm season, it may be a very good idea! I'll definitely give it some thoughts.

I'd wager you'd get $250 trade in value on a $500 rifle. Trouble with that is that you'll have to buy one with a scope and sight it in also, or also purchase a scope to put on it if you want to use a  scope.

Buy a used rifle, preferably already with a scope mounted, such as the two I posted links to previously, and when you sell after hunting season you should get all, or at least most, of your money back.

Take $400 down to Cabelas and buy a Ruger American or Savage Axis with a 3x9, then to the range for a few shots.  Afterward, sell it for $350 or keep it.

I see Savage rifles I think they are model 110 sell all the time for around $300. I almost bought one, a 30-06 with a decent Redfield scope for $319 a few months ago at the Tulalip Cabelas. I didn't want to deal with selling the rifle after I peeled the scope off.

"Alien firearm license" is Washington state, it doesn't trump federal law.
http://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=9.41.173

read the caution in the RCW
Quote
CAUTION: Although state and local laws do not differ, federal law and state law on the possession of firearms differ. If you are prohibited by federal law from possessing a firearm, you may be prosecuted in federal court. A state license is not a defense to a federal prosecution.

You need an ATF 6 NIA as a non-immigrant alien

This might apply to you
http://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=9.41.175

Hope this helps

Great news I got my alien firearm license!!!

While waiting I thought about it and now I think my best choice is to buy one for myself here and not import my own from Canada. Doing so, if someday I want to hunt in Canada again while I'm a USA resident, I won't have to go through the big process at the border to bring my firearm from USA to Canada. I also have the option to sell my firearm I left in Canada and use that money to buy my new one.

I still don't know if I'll buy a brand new rifle, used one or not at all. I included the "not at all" option because my parents brought my Horton Fury Crossbow from Canada last time they came. So now I also have the option to hunt with my crossbow during firearm season. I already bought new broadheads and a target. I'm just still struggling with myself, should I buy a firearm or use my crossbow? As a brand new one, the Browning X-Bolt 30.06 is tempting me a lot!

@KFhunter, thanks for the clarification. I searched a little bit more in the federal laws and found this : https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/may-nonimmigrant-alien-who-has-been-admitted-united-states-under-nonimmigrant-alien-visa
In short, I can now legally buy/possess a firearm. :)

Still, thank you for all your offers!

Jeep87,
How were you going to import your gun here? What is the process like. I only ask because I claimed my grandpas side by side, that's located in Europe, but have no idea how to legally import it here. I've tried to google search and came up empty. Stopped by a couple of gun shops, but they couldn't help me either.
