Buying a rifle that your more concerned with a follow up shot rather than the quality of the first one seems an odd idea to me.  I have found that first shot usually works the best and "Hose and Hope" seldom does.

Just a though on hunting with a short range lever gun in the brush.  You work your way through the brush and come out on a clearing or hill crest and standing in the open 300 yards away is a buck of a life time, lob a 30-30 or 45-70 at him or turn the the little 1-4x20mm scope up to 4x and raise your handy little bolt action 308 or 7mm-08 and kill him.  Been there and done that.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Some people just like their ARs.

Nice buck, looks like the "clearing" was a golf course   :chuckle:

Sorry had to wait till we got him home for pictures.

Killed on the far side of the clearing in the smaller pines, shot was taken from the same spot as the picture.

don't go 444 go 45-70... brush gun,  load -  alloy cast 500gr bullets tough to beat! TTL 2.100, 42Gr of 3031, WLR primer, 2.55coal @~1500fps. you will be happy.. I don't have the guide models have (3) of the XLR's peep and scoped for various situations.. never let me down.. hardened alloy cast at this slow speed really does a number without meat damage, any angle thru  and thru... AR - no input...

oh , I have a pretty nice load for your 257 wby too if you wanted..

one other thought, be careful of year of marlin, never was a fan of micro grooved barrels...

Marlin 336 in 30-30 w/scope
$457
Stag Arms Model 6 in .223 (Super Varminter)
$881

Plus you still have $600 left to buy a good optic and some ammo.

Prices from Bud's. Just checked.

:yeah: is not a bad idea there. I hunt Black tails and have never had to take a shot more than yards. Im sure one day i will find one that is further out, but the last 2 seasons i have been really loving the 7mm-08 for deer!!
