« on: July 29, 2015, 03:36:24 PM »
Just Recieved a climbing tree stand fr a buddy who can no longer use it back surgery :( but what I'm curious about it should I be using a tree strap or a safety line that has a slider?

If your talking about the tree strap that secures yours top half of the stand to the tree I say yes. If your talking about tree strap in the sense of securing yourself to the tree I would say for safety reasons yes. Granted I wont lie I rarely ever use mine with my climber. But its not the safest thing to do!  :bash:

I usually just havent because I never felt like having the harness on while packing my climber, bow, pack, cause that usually wasnt very close to where I started hiking. I recommend it though. Probably better than broken legs, hip, back, or dieing.

Have the bottom of the climber fall down one time and you'll answer your own question. I always wear one hang on or climber. I'm not into the falling out of the tree and being a cripple the rest of my life

with a climber you want one that will easily go up the tree as you climb.

Glad I found this thread as all I have now are the straps that come with the stand (required by law) and they're not the best.

I want something stiffer that's easy to flip up the tree and even break thin little dead branches,  the seatbelt style strap doesn't flip up the tree very well slowing my ascent/decent.

Almost sounds like you need both, tree strap for set up & the line for your go too stand location.

Ya, setting a semi perminant stand I'd use the lineman style tree strap and climb as your setting in ladders/steps then hang a permanent safety line.   With a climber you need to run the safety line up the tree same time as you're climbing.

Most folks with a hang on stand probably just climb up the ladders without being hooked up then just clip in once they reach the stand and sit down.

I have a tether that connects the seat section and foot/platform.  If it does drop out you it doesn't fall far and it is easy to get it back to where you need it.  I don't use a harness or strap (I should) because I have my climber set up where I sit deep in it but still have room to shoot.  I pretty much have to try to fall out of it.

I use a heavy duty climbing rope that was given to me.  I cut it into a few 20' lengths and put a loop on one end and rope goes through loop and down the tree.  Prusik knot on the rope with my harness attached to this.  Once the climber goes on the tree and I start climbing I am attached to the tree.  Just move the rope up as you climb.  Works perfectly.

I have a strap that attaches the top to the bottom of the climber.  Losing the bottom of the climber would be really bad.

Ya, I got the summit climber and it has a tether so you can't loose the bottom platform.

Like the idea of the climbing rope but I've no clue how to make a prusik knot.  Do you need special rope to make that knot and attach to your harness?

I have the Summit too but I don't know if I trust the little tether they provide.  I use one from ThirdHandArchery.

There is an animated knots website that you can use KF.  You make a loop out of some rope.  I bought a 4 foot section (pretty sure) from McClendons and once you have the loop made then the Prusik is super easy.  You just run it through itself three times.  It slides easy but with any downward pressure locks rock solid.

I could probably help you make one pretty easy.  Probably easier then explaining it.
