Target arrows for recurve?

I had asked this question on another thread, but on second thought that was inappropriate thread jacking. Sorry.

I'm currently shooting a 27# old Bear recurve target bow and using a mix of fiberglass and wood arrows left over from the 1970's (they came with the bow). I removed the broadheads and put target points on them. Had to re-fletch a few that were coming apart. I also bought a dozen fairly inexpensive (but not cheap) Chinese target arrow off of Amazon. They have plastic vanes, but I figured I could change those out. I haven't yet.

I think I'm ready to get some decent shafts. Without breaking the bank, (I am not going to fork over $10 each) can somebody please recommend a lightweight arrow, either Carbon fiber or Aluminum shaft, and a source? I believe I need real feather fletching and set up for a recurve - not a compound. The only difference there is the rotation of the nock in relation to the fletching, right? Thanks to my daughter, I'm on her Amazon prime account and get free 2-day shipping, so I do a lot of my shopping through them If the arrows are in stock I'd buy them there. There isn't an archery shop within 60 miles of me and with a $5 bridge toll, too.

No reason you cannot use vanes unless it is cold.
Reason for cock feather out is to avoid connecting with bow upon release.
Any
arrow spined around the weight of bow will work.
Just remember that the bow is weighed at (28?) and any under/over that will affect it -/+3lbs.
Walmart special 35# arrows will work just fine.

Great bang for your Buck are Deer Crossing Archery arrows. Bart Lawhorn who has been in the arrow business for 20+ years owns the company. http://deercrossingarchery.com/collections/dca-arrows They make some great arrows for a price that most can afford. Hope that helps. They make budget arrows all the way to higher end hunting arrows.

I checked out the deer Crossing website and I think they are way too pricey for my use. Also, there are so many choices to make that I wouldn't know if I am making the correct selections of components. Length is no problem, I measure out for a 28.6" shaft, so 29" would work. Also, spine size is easy, both my bows will take a 500 spine shaft.

But then you must select nock style. They give you three selections with no explanation (that I could see) as to which one fits my use. Same with points. Several choices there, again with no explanation of why I should choose one over the other. Again, the fletching. They don't say what it is, plastic or feather. They do give brand names but am I supposed to research all of these different manufacturers and their myriad product numbers to pick the fletching?

That's when I closed the page and decided I'll either go to Wal-mart or more likely Sportco in Tacoma. My wife has several appointments in Tacoma this month so I'll drive her in, then hop over to Sportco. My son told me to talk to a fairly large guy with gray hair and goatee. I'll bring a bow along so's he can see what I need.

New to trad, find someone to talk to in person. It could take you a long time to figure out what someone will tell you in a day. Most shop employees know nothing about trad so be careful listening to them. I had a guy at cabelas try to string a recurve backwards for me after saying how much he loves shooting recurves.

Quick break down, arrow point weight changes spine. 125 grains is what all shafts are spined for. So those carbons are .500 spine with a 125 grain point.

Also keep them full length in the beginning till you get consistent enough to tune them.

Vanes will only work on a well tuned set up. Feathers will work for anything. 3rivers is the place to look online or just call them.

Well, I guess you could say I'm new to traditional archery - the way it is nowadays. Nothing like it was when I bought my first longbow in 1960 or my first recurve a few years after that.  Still have that wood longbow, BTW.

But, you are exactly right. When I bought this Tamerlane a couple months ago, I had to get a string for it. Finally bit the bullet and drove 60 miles out to Spanaway and back, then waited a couple of weeks while they were made up and mailed out. Then I had the process of finding the correct brace height for an old, out-of-production bow.

I had some productive discussions on this forum, but a visit and chat with Thom at the Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club (I'm a member) cleared things up right off. Time to go pay him another call, methinks.

Arrow length and tip weight also affects spine.
It is better to be overspined than under.
The problem with vanes is if they contact the riser or arrow rest upon release, during warmer temps the stiffness of vanes can cause a slight kick-out due to contact, but with a plunger type rest that contact is negligible.
If you want to just shoot for fun, cheap arrows will work just fine.
If it was my bow, I would buy a good set of arrows for the fun of it, and shoot cheap ones for practice.
You cannot hunt with a 27# bow, (rabbits, grouse or Turkeys?) so unless you are in a competition, not really that important to have expensive arrows.
But as a lover of those old bows, one dozen fancy arrows just for the sake of having them, and a bunch of cheap arrows to practice with.
The main point is, the bow was made to have fun shooting, shoot it.
Practice the 11 steps, and enjoy holding a piece of history in your hand.
If the bow was over 40#@28, then things would be different.
But it was made to enjoy, a great bow to practice proper form with, and cherish because of the quality of craftsmanship.
Don't make it too complicated.

Just for the exercise. No hunting for these old bones. I've my old 40# longbow and a 42# Kodiak Special, but pulling the 27# suits me just fine.

This may be out of line on this forum but if you haven't already been there go to the forum for traditional archers only called Tradgang. If you go to the bottom of the forum index they have a listing for chapters in each state. Go to the Washington state thread and post there. You may or may not get any replies as they don't always respond but if you mention you would pay for coffee to meet and discuss this with someone I bet some would respond. I also live in Washington but am not very experienced In Archery so I couldn't help you much.

Leatherwall is another great site for trad guys and gals. When I was in Texas there was a Texas bowhunter site that had a traditional only section, it was the best resource I've ever know or heard about for information and help! If you ever need strings let me know and I can whip one up for you. Flemish 2 and 3 bundles.

As a "Traditional" Archer who has frequented both sites, you will be given the same information, but probably get more attitude.
And offers to sell you arrows for more than you want to pay.
I would only go on there to sell the bow. 

It is not rocket science, get some sticks and shoot.

Got four dozen. Looking forward to fletching, finishing and completing a dozen 50 years-old Port Orford Cedar shafts which came with my first Bear bow given me by my son. The bow and a lot of misc. gear was his dead father-in-law's and dates back to the 60's.

I plan to get around to it this winter when it's wet and cold outside. I hope to finish them in a Seahawks theme using Osprey feathers. Probably never shoot them - I couldn't stand to lose one. 

I just wanted to get some lightweight arrows to reduce the effect of range and drop.
