Iceman's Oatmeal

Earlier this year we discussed oatmeal in another thread. I mentioned what I put in mine and had some interest.

I am no nutritionist. I am also no athlete, granola head nor nutty-twig eating veggie headed co-op shopper(Evergreener). 

I am a redneck making oatmeal.

I am observant, and I am always looking for a way to save a buck or two. Below is what I have been doing for the last 10 years+. I have been making my own oatmeal with store bought materials. I am not following any nutritionists advise. I have no specific recipe. Each year I seem to forget one item and discover another. My thoughts on this recipe is to make an economical mix of various things that are good for you, which I take on most of my hunts and hikes. The recipe is loaded with lots of different items. Foods which provide energy at various times. Foods that provide extra protein to make me feel full. Foods high in fiber. No stiff leg waddle in my camp!

I also wanted to make my oatmeal easy to prepare later. I add things like brown sugar and powdered milk so all I need later is boiling water.  This oatmeal is my staple morning food during all of my hunting and hiking adventures, as well as thru the year. Easy to make, just boil water in a kettle, pour water over the stuff and let it set. I have started using a metal bowl, so I can cook it a bit longer, or just warm it up if it cools while I am doing something else. Easy to pour out of my mouse proof jars into my metal bowl. Cheap. Perfect. Let me know if you would add something else, there is always next years edition.....

Oatmeal, three types, quick oats, old fashioned oats and steel cut oats. Barley flakes, wheat bran, flax seed, textured vegetable protein, farina (malt-o-meal...), Grape nuts (crunchy nuggets/wallmart...), peanuts, sunflower seeds, walnuts, raisins, dried dates, brown sugar, powdered milk.

The powdered milk is great if you like a bit of milk in your oatmeal. Sometimes at camp I will toss a tablespoon of peanut butter into the bowl before the hot water, makes it really creamy and ups the calories for extra energy.

It is not that bad and I absolutly hate oatmeal. Ice gave me the recipe before I went on my deer trip and it does stick to the bones. If I can it, it must taste all right.

Sky, I just pour the boiling water in and can eat it that way... It sets up pretty good with the farina in there...helps thicken it in the bowl....If I toss in too much water, I cook it for a few seconds to help reduce it down a bit... I hate soupy/wet oatmeal....

Nah, I havent really paid that much attention.... I really didnt measure anything. I will say, have more oatmeal in those tall tube/boxes ready to go, incase you run low on the batch. If I made more money in my job, I would put more of those dried dates, and add some cashews. Cashews are awesome in it.

Edit, just for you Sky!  ;) OK, just dug out my freddies receipt, here is what I bought...some I had in stock, and guessed the quantity...

This batch had
1 Tube/carton of quick oats.
2 Tubes/cartons of Old fashioned oats.
1.5lbs of steel cut oats.
2lbs rolled barley flake
1lb TVP, textured vegetable protein.
1/2lb wheat bran
1 box of grape nuts
1 box of farina, creme of wheat...
1&1/2lb of flax seed. Whole, next time I am going to blend/break/grind the flax, forgot this time...
1lb dried dates
1lb raisin
1lb sunflower seed
3lbs peanuts
1lb walnuts
10 ounches powdered milk
16 ounces brown sugar?

one word of warning, ground flaxseed goes rancid pretty quickly and when it does it gets bitter and produces toxins.  Its better to grind it as needed.

I like making homemade granola myself  ;) the more dried fruit the better..... dried cranberries rock

Good to know, thanks.  In the past it has always been whole. Just saw on TV that it is supposed to be far more beneficial to you if you consume it in the ground version.

Good to know. In the past it has always been whole. Just saw on TV that it is supposed to be far more beneficial to you if you consume it in the cround version.

Yeah kinda like corn otherwise  :P it just goes rancid really fast when ground even refrigerated it doesn't last long.  I know they sell it ground in stores but I sure wouldn't buy it that way  ;)

Sounds really good, I work away from my family all week so I'm always looking for good ideas that are quick and taste good. My wife will like it to because its healthy, she is on the verge of being a granola eating health nut. I make up for it for her.  :chuckle:

My daughter is a bit of a vegetarian. She won't eat meat, but will eat eggs and cheese and some fish.  She isn't on the PETA level, she's smart enough to know those people are beyond crazy.

Anyhow, she found a grain called Quiona (kinwa). It's a south American grain that has complete protein. It's high fiber and has a good amount of iron. It cooks up like rice, but you need to make sure to rinse it well first because it has a real bitter coating. The stuff you buy in the store is usually pre rinsed so it shouldn't be a big deal.

Anyhow, I've put it in oatmeal before and it's pretty good. I noticed I stayed fuller longer when I added it, probably due to the protein. It helps to grind it up a little so it cooks at the same speed as the rest of the oatmeal. You can even grind it into a flour if you want too. A coffee grinder works great.

Boy do I look out of place in the whole foods section. NOthing but lightly bearded women in dreadlocks with hairy armpits and legs, sporting broom stick skirts and army boots. One of them had a rougher 5 oclock shadow than I did and when I went over to get a plastic bag near her, she smelled like a locker room. Her mate was apparently also a female, but didnt show it. Something is wrong with Olympia.

Well if I were ever going to eat Oatmeal yours would be it. Maybe if you crumbled some bacon in it, not much 50% ratio, I would be inclined to eat it. :chuckle:

Bump for the newbies.

I am getting near the end of this batch made in Jan 09... I am thinking about starting to gather materials again to make a bunch again. This batch was a bit light on actual oats and I think I will up the Oat a bit, plus add more nuts. The old peanut butter jars were fantastic to store it in for the last year+, the oatmeal came out great and did not seem stale, and no pests. We ate this at all hunt camps as well as for breakfast around the home a day a week or more for well over a year and a half. Very economical way to go.

Looks good!  If your looking for cheap oats I usually pick up certified weed free oats from the Farmers Supply store.  Same oats, different package and cheap bulk.  I usually pick up the smallest bag and keeps me in oatmeal for the winter.  I'm going to try your mix, looks like good calorie count and energy in the smallest, easist size.  I might toss in some dried blueberrys into the mix for a little added taste.

Amazingly I am just about finally done with this batch....about to run out.

Let's see, January 09 till now....  I think I made too much last time, or do not eat it enough.

Still no bugs.... and the nuts in the mix taste good, not spoiled.   I think 3 years is pushing it though and I will probably be making a smaller batch next time.

Thanks for the info Ice, can't go wrong with oatmeal.  Cheap and nutritious.  When I go on hunting trips (or heck, everyday actually) I put the following in ziplock bags.  1 bag for each day ... reuse the bags so the greenies don't come after you  :chuckle:

1 cup oatmeal (I get Quaker, can get a ton of it at costco for around $6), 1 cup frozen blueberries (can also get at Costco fairly cheap, like $10 for a very large bag), 1/4 cup sliced almonds (again, Costco - 3lb bag for $10), and 1 scoop of the protein powder of your choice (Costoc again, $35 for a 6 pound bag).  Throw all that in a ziplock bag, make as many bags as you need (1 bag = 1 breakfast), and throw them in the freezer.  They stay cold in a cooler and help keep other things cool, and cook up just fine by dumping boiling water on it.  Wash it all down with a glass of fat free milk  :tup:

  - 800 Calories
  - 53 grams protein
  - 95 grams carbs
  - 24 grams fat
  - 29 grams sugars (from the blueberries and milk)
  - 65 mg cholesterol
  - 282 mg sodium
  - 16 grams fiber

That sticks to your ribs for sure and will keep you going strong all morning.  Total cost is around $60, and when purchased at Costco the ingredients above will stretch 2 months.  Averages out to about $1 per day for breakfast

During winter I usually do oatmeal.  I do quick oats in the microwave.  Oats, water and a pinch or two of homemade dried apples.  The apples are dried rings.  I usually tear them into chunks and throw them into the bowl.  Zap it for 2 and 1/2 minutes and then add some honey and a dusting of cinnamon.

I have recently started eating oatmeal for breakfast everyday and man I love it! I got some good ideas from his original post. Right now I do a 1/3 cup old fashioned oats, 1/3 cup steel cut oats, 1/3 cup frozen blue berries, 1 scoop of protein powder (glad to see i'm not the only one that does this) and 2 tablespoons of mixed ground chia seeds/flax seed/hemp seeds. I usually drink a protein shake along with this. If I eat that at 8:00 a.m. I won't be hungry until 1:30 or 2:00.

I'm going to try some of this stuff that ICEMAN suggested though, it sounds great.

I use Bobs Red Mill 10 Grain Hot Cereal, sometimes 50/50 with Oatmeal. very good! :)

I really like Quaker instant oats.  Its quick and tasty!
