10mm hunting sidearm load?

I finally tracked down a decently priced Gen4 Glock 20 today and looking to put together a good bear load.  Of course I know, "start low and build up" but im looking for good info on your preferred projectiles and why? Any first hand experience with this round against bear?

Forgot to mention that I finished bear number 2 with a 10 yard pass through shot last year.  Maybe a little much, but with bears and cats I'm not screwing around!

Personally I think you should be able to finish an animal with a .22 pistol.

Just remember that if you want to use full power 10 mm in your glock , get a fully supported barrel. I'm sure the stock one will do fine but it only takes one  to make a bad day. i run 200 gr hornday xtp loaded to the max with power pistol. No pressure signs on the case, I could go a little hotter but i have the glock barrel in it now. Have heard of using 110 or 2400 for hot loads but I use blue dot or power pistol mostly.
 6" barrel may help with getting more power out of your loads.

I really like the XTP'S im my 1911's but have heard that a hard cast or FMJ is better for bear since expansion=limited penetration?

The unsupported barrel was made for reliability. Also due to the hexagonal barrel you should not shoot lead out of it due to the risk of build up and blowing the barrel.
Go to lone wolf and get a aftermarket barrel they are around $110.

I have a gen 4 g20 and like it allot. My advice is to reload.

Hard cast lead for serious work.
Sounds like you need a new barrel for the appropriate load.

Shudda bought a Rock Island Armory 1911 in 10mm, no worries then.....just kidding. I've got a Glock 29sf too and wouldn't worry about using hardcast ammo in any quality pistol..

I liked the 200gr XTP or a heavy cast bullet in my 10mm pistols. Shooting hard cast lead in a factory barrel isn't a problem if you keep it clean. Soft swaged lead bullets are a bad idea though.

Or you could just get a S&W 610 and have some real fun!

Hmmm, I purposely went with the Gen4 in thinking that the support issue was resolved. I replaced the factory barrels on my gen3 G26 and G19 with lone wolf threaded (a pipe-dream of buying a suppressor for them some day) so Ill go ahead and do the same on the G20. Seems like this should have been resolved by the release of the 4th generation though 

It looks like the XTP will be a good option until I get the new barrel though. And for those of you saying that I should buy more guns; youre preaching to the choir on that one  I love me some 1911's (see name) so I may have to keep an eye open for a Rock Island or Colt. Thanks again for tge help.

200gr XTP I think is the way to go for hunting.  A self defense round should probably be hard cast so you can break shoulders on a charge, but hunting you should be thinking about placement and bleed out = expansion.   A hard cast through the boiler room might give the bear more time to run and less blood to follow.


If you search hog hunting with the 10mm the XTP is a proven round

I'd also run the lone wolf barrel, stainless guide rod and 24lb spring.  I can also verify that it cycles just fine with a 24lb spring and .40S&W barrel, the brass doesn't go far though kind of lands at your feet   

My next adventure will be the 9×25mm Dillon for hunting

I just read that they did support the barrel more now but the back of brass that hangs out is the solid part so you should OK, as long as you stay within pressure specs.. Bears are tough but not THAT tough!! Lol

I have seen a wounded bear shot 3 times in the neck, at the base of the skull, with a 44 mag. 240 grain softpoints, Winchester load. Had to be shot with 30/06 to kill it. Bullets penetrated about 3 inches.
I have seen a bear killed at about 2 feet in the dark using a flashlight, 357 mag 158 grain HP, one shot in the head.
there is a lot to know about killing.

I wasn't trying to call you out or anything. I was just curious if I missed something. But this pistol is legal. It has a 4 inch barrel and is over .24 caliber.

Clarification: I will be carrying this as a sidearm during archery season; not my primary weapon.

It was either Buffalo bore or Double Tap 200 or 220 grain. I tried both brands in both 200 and 220 grain and the 200s fed best in my gun.

I'm running 180XTP handloads in mine.  I looked into 200XTP's, but from all I have seen (ballistic gelatin tests etc) you don't gain much and expansion/penetration is about equal.  Plus I can run the 180 grain bullets in my .40 S&W handloads.

Any issues with lead fouling? I may just invest in 100 rounds of this and load lighter (read - less expensive) rounds for routine practice

No issues at all. I bought a lone wolf barrel but ended up not using it because I kept have trouble with feeding so I went with the stock barrel instead.
