Kuiu icon pro 5200/7200
« on: August 09, 2015, 06:33:18 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with either of these packs? Going on a 10 day hunt in the frank church in November. Seeing how these packs perform under heavy load from gear and game. Has anyone taken these packs on a multi-day hunt? Any help would be much appreciated!

I won't be too much help, but, I have the icon pro 1850 to use as a day pack with. Super comfortable. Extremely light. Meat packable. Adjusts great. I've hauled maybe 50lbs with it and with some weight in it it's even more comfortable. The frame pivots side to side with your torso. So far so good. This is just on day hikes and packing salt/trail cams. It's the same frame as your 5200/7200 would be.

I recommend the Icon Pro series.  You will want the 7200 for a 10-day trip.  I use the 7200 to pack in and convert to the 1800 bag for day hunts out of camp.  Most comfortable pack I've used and I've used a lot of them.

Is the only difference between the 5200 and the 7200, is that the 7200 can expand between the bag and the frame to put a dry bag between the two to haul more of a load and create the extra 2000ci? Or does it have 7200ci plus the ability to create 2000 more to make a total or 9200ci!?? Clarification on this would be great!

The bag is actually 2000ci larger on the 7200. All the bags can expand off the frame to put meat/dry bag in between the frame and bag.

I've got the Icon pro 7200 and live it.. been walking the hills daily with weight to get ready for our November Frank church hunt also.. Which airstrip you headed to sage?

I'm not a load shelf guy personally.  When you put meat between the frame and bag, then your gear load in your bag is a long ways from your body.  This is how the term, monkey on your back came from I think.  Also, it looks to me like when you meat shelf a load, you lose the function of your load lifters (one of the most important features of a heavy hauler).  I could be wrong though.  I have played with and worn the icon pro's but never hauled with them.

I would just plan on hauling gear and meat in the pack itself.  A 7200 bag will fit it all.

I was thinking the same thing, too far away from your body. Could really get you off balance and a hurt back! I wish I could afford a Kifaru, just not in the cards for me. I have yet to hear anything bad about these packs. I have a ton of Kuiu clothing, I have been impressed with everything I have bought from them so far.

Will the ultra 6000 pack carry weight as well as the pro icon? At 5'6''and 142lb  the pro icon 7200will be too big for me and the 5200 too small. Plan to use it for backpacking also.

the ultra I played with was a cheap piece of junk in my opinion.  I wouldn't waste your money.  7200 compresses well,  it would Def work.

It is Def light.   Closures sucked,  it didn't carry weight well at all, and is just too basic.  I'm a no frills minimalist kind of guy but the ultra took it too far.  Some guys love em though so don't take my word for it I guess.  If it sparks your interest I'm sure there is someone on here that would let you lay your hands on one.

watch some of the other forums like rokslide.  All the guys wanting the new frame are offloading their bikinis and duplex frames for pretty good prices.  I don't know if I would go with the bikini frame or not, as I know quite a few guys who went to the duplex for better load hauling capabilities but for the right price, it's a great frame.  If you can get the frame for decent, there are always bags for sale on rokslide and other places for good deals.

Do you have to buy the pack and frame seperate?

It's the same frame with either bag. Either the frame fits or it doesn't. It doesn't change between bags.

Buy the icon pro frame and whatever bag you choose, then you can take and put whatever size bags you want tow buy  and throw them on the frame.

I put 120 lbs on my Ultra 6000 and a couple 90lb loads last fall and it handled the load very good once adjusted properly. Not much difference in comfort up the mountain than my Kifaru.  :twocents:

Same results with my Ultra.   Had 80 lbs of boned out deer in mine last year and it hauled very nicely.   I used mine as a day pack with 3000 bag.   6000 bag for longer trips.
