potty training puppy
« on: January 11, 2009, 08:58:09 PM »
so as you all know already i got a new lab puppy i am trying to potty train him in the house , he does ok when i take him out , but if he drinks lots of water he will go in the house even after he went outside like 20 min earlier , he has gone poop in the house a few times, any suggestions on what you all did to your dogs and how you trained them... i do have another female black lab but she is more of an outside dog than inside she comes in every once in a while , im trying to train the new pup inside away from my other dog so there is no distraction my other dog still needs some training but has the basics down , like sit , stay , come , calm down ( she is very high strung) so when i tell her to calm down she calms down to a certain point only to my command no one else , i can leave her off leash anywhere i go , she has heel command preety good, i bought a shock collar for her and i only used it a couple times now all i need to show he is the remote and she knows instantly what it is (i dont even need to put the collar on her just show her the remote but sometimes she for gets so i have to remind her)

The lab learns really fast you just have to keep showing her where to go, In a couple weeks she will just be at the door wanting out. Labs are so cool. My puppy is 4 now.

When I got my GSP at 12 weeks old, I would just make sure to let him out very often, and if I knew he had been drinking water, I would make him go outside then too. Verbal praise for going outside too every time he would go. It takes a lot for him to whine at the door, but he has never had an accident since about 2 weeks after I got him. Even then, I think he only peed in the house one time.

Take him out after every meal and watering.  Also every time he wakes up immediatly.  Don't go crazy on the scolding at this point.  Later that helps but not at this age.  Just constantly take him out side into the same area.  He will smell his old and put down some new.

he has got his area preety much down outside , i think the only mistake i am doing is not sitting out there with him and praising him for going to the bathroom outside , after he wakes up i let him out and he does fine .... i constantly let him out but like one day i let him went to the bathroom but he had drank water after that and then he went inside 3 times , im sure he will pick up to it quick he is getting there .... do you guys punish the dog if he goes in the house , if so what do you do , the only thing i have done is after he goes inside i take him out right after he does it

You need to tell him no sternly if you catch him in the act.  Don't rub his nose in it, or drag him across the room to show him.  He has totally forgot about it before it hits the floor.  If you catch him and tell him no it won't hurt to make him stay outside a little longer.  As far as sitting outside and praising him.  Uh....you can do that if you want but he does not need that.  You will be playing with him inside, and he will start wizzing.   :chuckle: :chuckle:Now in another 6-8 months, and he hides when he sees you before you find it.  Now that is a different story and discussion.

I always told my dog no with a stern voice after going in the house. Then I would carry her to the door and make her scratch the door, and put her out. Never spank them for going in the house as it will make them a little shy. Now my dog will sit at the door and just hit the door with her foot, she won't scratch just a simple little tap. Also the verbal praise when they go outside will work wonders on a dogs moral.

fortunately my pup came potty trained believe it or not. what the breeder was telling us was that anytime they were fed they were taken outside immediately after and were given like 10-20 mins to do their deal and then were praised and taken back inside. although he did have a couple accidents (my fault not paying attention to his signs that he needed to go) but he never pooped inside, just peed.

there will always be accidents, just be patient and keep repeating you have to be stern with the accidents but praise and lots of it when they are good, there is a book called Water Dog by Richard Wolters you can pick up just about anywhere that I think might help you a ton I used it when training my first pup, I still use a lot of what I learned in that book plus some other stuff i've picked up but he covers potty training, just an idea :)

One of the books reccomended to me by the owner of Three Devils Kennels was "The Art of Raising a Puppy" by the The Monks of New Skete. I highly reccomend this book. One of the things it teaches is everytime the pup goes out to go the bathroom use a keyword or phrase. Mine is "go potty". I do it everytime the pups are out and then I praise them when they are done with "good dog". As they get older that keyword or phrase works great when you take them out and do not want to stand in the rain. The book says that accidents will happen and that one should not reprimand the pup for it because as pack leaders it is our job to make sure that it does not happen. Like an above post said take them out more often.

On a side note I have heard of people who, instead of using a keyword or phrase, ring a small bell everytime they take the dog out to go the bathroom. As the dog gets older they affix the bell next to the door and when they dog wants to go out the dog will ring the bell letting you know they need to go.
