What bullet for muzzyloader's and elk
« on: September 21, 2007, 07:38:14 AM »
I've been shootin 295gr powerbelts but am thinking about a switch.  I bought some 348gr powerbelts but I hear they act the same as the 295.

They open up to about the size of a quarter and rest against the hide on the off side.

I'm after total penetration.

Any ideas??

I have hunted with muzzleloaders for 30 yrs. have tried about all the bullets out there . Don't worry about total penetration. Shoot the ONE that is the most accurate in your gun. With the powder charge that is the most accurate . you do not need 150 gr. of X powder to kill a deer or elk .
I shoot flintlock and have killed more with round balls and 80 to 90 grs. of Black powder than anything else.

I'm using 375 grain Buffalo Bullets in my 50 caliber T/C Black Diamond. If I use my other gun, a Lyman Deerstalker in 54 caliber, it's sighted in with 300 grain Precision Rifle "Extreme Elite" bullets. I also had some 360 Extreme Elites in 50 caliber but I'm out of those. Haven't yet decided which rifle I'll be using...maybe will bring both. Here's some info on the Extreme Elite bullets:

I have shot the PR bullets and the knight bullets. I have better accuracy with the knight bullets in the 310 grain variety. 1 inch groups at 100 yards.

Off the bench I can get 1" groups with my Knight and the 310s also. I am also happy with the performance on critters.   :)

When we started ML we all bought bighorns, and were taken in by the magnum 150 grain loads. But the first time up shooting we noticed flamage out the end of the barrel, and alot of wasted unburned powder. And reduced accuracy.
We cut down to 110 grains of powder and went up to 310 bullets, we started with the 265s. A whole lot better now.
But the animals hit with a ML do not leave much of a blood trail.
