Kuiu hunting clothing/ what do you wear?
« on: August 19, 2015, 10:48:55 AM »
Sorry this is probably a double posting but I figured I would ask. I have been looking into actually getting a nice set of hunting clothing for my pasayten wilderness hunts. I hunt up there every year during the high buck hunt and during general season. I have been looking into the KUIU brand a lot because they are cheaper then Sitka. I have also looked at the First light brand, cabelas instinct gear, and Nomad. Just trying to see if anyone has any experience with these and what they prefer or how they performed. The pasayten is rough and steep and the weather can be hot one day and wet and cold the next. (anyone that has hunted up there knows how quickly the weather changes. I was going to select the KUIU Guide DCS Jacket and the KUIU attack pant.

I picked up some Kuiu gear this year. I ordered there KUIU Guide DCS Jacket and Pants about 4 months ago and I finally received the Pants about a week ago. I called Kuiu this morning to find out when I will be getting the Jacket and they told me the same story as the last 5 times I called "We should be expecting another shipment in soon". I was told it should be here late August..

If you want that Guide gear, I suggest ordering them ASAP as the back orders will keep piling up.  Or go with a different line of Kuiu. First lite brand is also really nice, cant go wrong there.  :twocents:

I have quite a bit of Kuiu clothing, and I love it all. I love my Guide Jacket, but it's not something I usually take on a backpack hunt. I take my Chugach rain jacket and Superdown jacket instead. The Attack Pants are great, one of my favorite pieces. I think the Firstlite merino base layers are better than the Kuiu.

I'm trying attack pants this year. The few times out scouting they have performed well. I love the fit. The side zip vents really help when its warm out. I hope they wear well and last.

Love both the first lite and kuiu.  The first lite is my favorite, I ordered the puffy and got it within a week and the under garments are really nice. Either brand you can't go wrong.

I keep hearing the guide jacket is a must have.  No brainer to pick up one of those to start.

I have a older pair of attack pants. Really like them. And really need to preorder some attacks with the side vents.

So this year I went with Kuiu, everything has fit well and should function for the way that I hunt.  So here is my list.

Chugach NX Rain gear- was looking at the Yukon set up but wanted more versatility throughout the year
145 Merino top/bottom- love merino base layers, started with terramar and decided to upgrade
Alpine pants- early season, I have most of my set ups from either a sitting or kneeling shot position for stability so pads were a must
Peloton 200 hooded zip-t-early season top or late season layering
Guide Jacket and Pants- cold early season weather or late season layering

I also picked up some socks, gloves, and bino harnass.  Waiting on gaiters to round out.  I went with Verde for the pattern here on the West side.
Still planning on getting some 210 merino and the super down, but if I get lucky and fill some tags those will be Christmas gifts.  Also looking hard at their bag.  I like the specs, but still have to think about that.  It took me 3 years to decide to get this stuff.

I would have gone kuiu, but I just have a problem with not being able to try stuff on before buying. With that said, I pulled the trigger on first lite. Guide pant and long sleeve merino top.
The guide pant is very comfortable and flexible. Very nice!

For the sizing I took a few peoples advice and tried on Sitka stuff at the store than envisioned a little more athletic fit in areas and ended up pretty much right on with my sizing.  It won't be too baggy when I get to my goal weight and right now it's not tight or constricting with all layers on.

I take my Chugach rain jacket and Superdown jacket instead. I think the Firstlite merino base layers are better than the Kuiu.

Merino base, chugach rain gear, fleece mid layers is a good start.......

Spot on.

Kuiu clothing and stone glacier or Exo packs.

Ive worn the ultra and non ultra merino layers, Tiburon pants, attack pants, guide pants, guide vest, super down jacket, Yukon set, merino/guide beanies, guide gloves, and peloton jacket. All have their place and work well. I didn't care for the gloves, I'm yet to find gloves I like. The Yukon set is too heavy for backpacking, but if you need a waterproof and durable set for day hunting, its legit. Tiburon pants are my favorite warm weather pants, they breath incredibly well and are durable to boot. In September I'll pair them up with a merino 145 LS shirt and the guide vest for early mornings. When things warm up I shed the vest. The guide series is great for late season, and if it gets cold toss on the Super down underneath it.

I'd really do hate Kuiu as a company, but I'm yet to find better fitting and working gear. I guess the devil you know is better than the devil you don't.

I have the Tiburon line.. and love it. the only problem i have with Kuiu is that they have a hard time keeping items in stock.. If you look at there web site today you will notice half if not more items are back ordered. Other then that I might order more and expect to receive it next year....
