i have a winchester model 94 in 30-30 and a marlin 336 in 30-30. both have killed deer back east, none have killed deer out west.
neither have scopes...open sighted fast handling rifles for the thick woods for the northeast part of the country. solid shooters out to 100 yards IMO.

All of those will and can kill deer.  Nothing wrong with a good old 30-30.  Bone...bud who has died used to hunt with me using a really old 25-35.  Good memories.

My dad just bought a a Marlin 336 in 30-30 from someone on this site.  We took it to the range this weekend and it did awesome.  3 bullets touching at a hundred yards with the Hornady Leverevelution.  It has 3-9x40 Nikon Prostaff scope.  I really like that gun and wish I could have bought it.

I have a winchester model 94 in 30-30 (pre 64) that was my fathers. It has no scope...open sighted. It is a fast handling rifle. I agree it's a solid shooters out to 100 yards. Hope to get a marlin 336 one day.

Now I know who keeps buying up all of the 32 spec ammo. I have one that was given to me for my 16th birthday in excellent condition. I haven't actually killed anything with it but it's a great gun. I will pasted down to my son when he is old enough.

Does a BLR count?  Love mine, and will buy another maybe this year, or next.  Strong as a bolt, and more caliber options.  Wish they made it in .338 Federal.  I would have one now.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

I bought 10 boxes of it at shooters supply right before they went out of business.  Then I special ordered a die for it and am good to go now.  25-35 ammo has been hell trying to track down.  I thought the 25-20 would be hard but I am finding more of it thatn the 25-35.

I started reloading because of that problem, of the 4 places I know that sometimes carries 32 special... usually only one box between them.

you get components I'll put them together for you.

Shot my first deer with a Winchester 94 pre '64. I needd to check the age on this one because It's old.

Traded my dad a Marlin 44 for his 336 30-30. I bought one of the current Marlin 1894s in 32 H&R MAg. Sure like the rifle but it is the heavy cowboy model. For my anniversary the wife bought me a Savage 99 in 250-3000, built 1929. This year for Christmas she bought me her grandpa's Win 88 in .308.

As far as the .357 vs 30-30 if I ould go with the .357. It's a blast to shoot, plus you can shoot .38 specials. Although it is not as powerful as the 30-30 it is way more fun to shoot.

Sears model 54 in 30-30.  It is the Winchester mod 94; the difference in the front stock band is wider than the 94 and it is marked Sears.

I saw an Uberti at Joe's yesterday in .45LC with a octagon barrel, I think it is the 1874 model.  I have to save up for this one

Marlin 30-30 modle 336. Good shooter. Also have my Grandpas OLD Marlin 30-30 that has killed deer in the hands of most my family members. It has an old Pacific scope fixed 4 power on it. I put a Leupold 2x7x33 on my 336. Both rifles shoot great!

It's definitely a very solid built levergun.  100% machined parts.  Mine was manufactured in 1939.  Winchester quit making them after 20 years because they were too expensive to manufacture.  It flat out put's the hurt on anything hit with it.  My father owned one in the 50's.  His hunting stories were the reason I went looking for one.  Here's a good article about them in case anyone is interested.

Marlin 336, 35 rem,the most accurate round nose lever gun I've ever seen. 336 much better gun than the 94 IMO. 35 ballistically superior to the 30-30 in every way.

I agree on the Winchester Model 88 in .308.  I believe they are built better than the Savage 99's.  My dad even had "Model 88" at one time for his license plate and no one knew what it meant until we met a guy in Yak, Montana one year when we were up there hunting and the guy asked dad what caliber was his favorite.  I think they made it in .243, .264, and 35 Whelan also.  The .308 has shot a bunch of deer and remains one of my favorite rifles.  Too bad Winchester quit making them 40 years ago.   :(

Savage model 99, .300 savage.  Groups touch at 100 yards with factory loads.  Don't want to shoot it must past 200, but it's one sweet shooter.

Browning BLR in .358.  This gun in the stainless version is about as good as it gets for sub 250 yard shots.  Perfect blend of big bullet capability and reach.
