Who's getting excited for the 1ST
« on: August 20, 2015, 11:30:34 AM »
I am excited to be back in the woods with bow in hand and camo never know when you mite have that opportunity to be close enough to a monster buck to draw the bow you have spent so much time with practicing all year waiting for that one moment when the realse goes off and the arrow leave and hits its mark. It is sure an amazing feeling.

I'm rooting for the bow hunters this year. Going to tuff for lots of folks, but I know this group will sure try and will play their hand.  Good Luck guys and girls!

I was excited until the fires got out of control.  It's so hot and dry out that I am not sure it is worth the risk even being in the mountains and that may not matter if they shut them down...

Here's what I hunted in last weekend down here in CA.  Not ideal, but there were lots of deer still.

 :yeah:

All the bucks I've been keeping tabs on moved on to cooler (and closed) areas.  I'm going out with almost no intel.  Multi-season tag takes the pressure off a bit. Going to be really noisy in the woods - hope to make it work for me rather than against me.   Still, it will be good to be out again with intent to kill.

Noisy is right, but i'm still excited.  I'll be in my blind looking for coyotes this weekend though.  Will give me a chance to see what the deer think of my setup.

Did a couple hours of scouting over each of the last two days at first daylight south of Kitsap.  Other than a single rabbit and a pesky squirrel, I didn't see anything moving at all.  The moon phase is pretty good right now so I'm surprised  at the inactivity.

Everything is bone dry and there's a hell of a lot of smoke in the sky.  I'm still going out on the 1st with fingers crossed.

Not me. After shooting my deer in early September a couple years ago I swore I would never hunt the early archery season for deer again.

Why? Is it just because you ended your season too early?

yeah..why? If I find a shooter buck thats worthy of a tag in November Im hunting him in September...not like you get multiple opportunities at big bucks...its usually lots of days on the stand and hundreds of hours of sitting to hope for 1 opportunity at said buck..I use all the days of both seasons to close the deal on a shooter. And even that doesnt always work out. Last year I sat 23 days in a stand to never see any of the shooters I was after. If I do tag out in September it opens up other hunts..like going to ID and hunting deer or elk

No, it was cause it was so warm out ( 80 that day if I remember right). That once I shot my deer it became a strenuous, stressful struggle to quickly get the deer gutted, drug out to the truck and try to get it cooled down before it started to go bad. All that while fighting bees and flies trying to keep them off of it. Then get home and quickly have to butcher it up and not being able to let it hang. In the end it took all the fun out of the hunt and the meat just wasn't quite as good IMO. So for that reason I now wait till late season to bow hunt.

Never had a issue or hurried any deer..September whitetail is by far the best to eat hands down not even comparable to November deer. So I guess you dont bow hunt elk.  Ive hung elk in 80 degree weather in the shade overnight and its fine.

No sadly all of my hunting buddies are to lazy to go chase elk. I have always wanted to but don't wanna go at it alone.

Its gonna be a strange year for sure! But 110 percent effort should still be rewarded in the end.

Hope this smoke clears or it will be a pain trying to breathe..
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

I went and hiked my camp in yesterday about 6 miles for the archery opener on the east side and I felt like it was hard to breath. I couldn't tell if it was from the smoke or altitude but usually I do great been hitting the gym everyday and I'm only 26 so idk

I don't know how it will be when the 1st finally arrives, but anyone heading east should be aware of the smoke problems.  It is so thick in some areas that any heavy working will make you sick, and it comes on kind of quick.  I'm very healthy and on Saturday I was only good for about an hour outside before heavy coughing and dizziness set in.  Taking a long hike into that smokey country could be kind of risky.  Part of the problem is how quickly the smoke can set in.  You might get an hour of fairly clear sky, then suddenly it's so smokey you can't see 1/4 mile.  Just something to keep in the back of your mind before you take off on a long hike into the off road areas. And NO CAMPFIRES, I know some of the locals in our area are self policing and are not going to be very kind to anyone who starts a any kind of campfire.

I'm always excited to be out in the woods, this will be my first year archery hunting. Just wish we had a little bit more rain so things were so dry

My first archery hunt as well. My scouting so far this year has not turned up very much activity, but I do know where a few bucks like to hang out... :D

Anyhow, I'm going to hunt low creeks and north facing slopes to try and combat this heat. It'll be fun no matter what.

I'm liking this forecast for the archery opener.  Perhaps a few wet, windy, cool days will get some deer up and moving around by the first.

I was looking forward to the 1st (well the 3rd is when I was leaving) but my area is closed due to fires.  Maybe with the rain it will open back up sometime this next week but I doubt it.

Looking like more closures on the eastside but my normal areas for rifle are still open. Will be my first year archery hunting

Where can one go to see where the closures are?  I’m just hearing yesterday at work from a fellow hunter that there are areas closing, specifically State land.

I went to the wdfw site and they had links. I know that inland empire land is closed and that is on their site. For national forest go to their site and select Washington and choose the national forest in question

It just hit me yesterday when my soon to be wife said "I thought deer season started on the first why don't you take Saturday to pack your truck up and get ready to hunt?"

I thought about it and realized I'm hunting in just a few days. I have been practicing shooting since turkey season where I took a jake with my bow hoping to get a shot at the buck on the right from inside 50 yards.

I put my ground blind out yesterday with only two tie-downs.  After today's big blow, that thing may be miles away!

It strikes me as a little bit funny that WDFW has not published their 2015 Hunting Prospects report yet.  Although the report it isn't really a help (because all the regional biologists do is compile information that is already available), it is still kinda fun to read through.  The District 10 report is total trash - no effort whatsoever.

I put mine out last weekend in the desert. I'm pretty nervous to see if it's still there or destroyed when I go check the setup tomorrow.

I just realized yesterday that the 1st is almost here.  I have been seeing lots of deer just in areas I don't hunt.  Been out on fires for pretty much the whole last 2 months.  Did get a couple 2 week break end of August.  The nice thing is as I lay here in my tent it is raining.  I am in Omak.  Saw a wolf to.  Animals are getting pushed around by the fire for sure.

Boss informed our crew yesterday that we'd get Tuesday off. Began to consider myself lucky, then he informed us we'd be starting up again at 12am Wednesday.  :bash:
Regardless my nearby access points are dependent upon GD and/or Manke lifting their closures, which hopefully if the rain keeps up they will.
