"he'll be a good one next year"
« on: January 13, 2009, 11:16:42 AM »
sorry, no pics, I was just wondering...

I see a lot of deer year after year and I always tell myself "he'll be a good one next year", In reality, a lot of these deer never do get big. It seems like a lot of bucks I watch only reach 150" - 160". they'll grow the same rack about every year from 3 to 6 years of age. I've seen plenty of exceptions to this but for the most part, most deer in the areas I look will never get big. This just goes to show that it takes more than age to make a big deer.

do you notice this also?

I'll try to dig up some pictures for reference, please post any pics you have of these "nice bucks year after year"

I would say that yes this is true in certain areas for sure.  Takes genetics and feed and minerals to make it all come together.  One thing in common though, age is always a factor.

yep, same for whiteys, big 4x4 whitey will be that way forever, people amaze me every year that think they will be a 5x5 next year, by 31/2 you will know what his frame will be, sure with age he might get a little trash, maybe, but most of that is showing by 31/2.I have bucks at my house that I watched for 5 years never exceded 130, one was alive last year 8 1/2 yrs old still a 4x4.

Here you go Bone, a good example.
The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first!
