2009 shed hunt contest?
«

Could be fun to do. Real easy point system, the amont of scoreable points (at least 1'') the antler has is the number you get. No difference in any species as far as score goes. A lot of us do it so we could have a good amount of people in the contest. If some of you want to set it up or help set it up let me know.

Sounds like a good contest. My only concern is people pushing wintering animals TOO early. It's becoming a HUGE problem these days. Not sure how to get around this...

I was going to mention that. There would be no trophy or prize so it s not a rush to get them. I am going to start for Blacktails here pretty soon. They have it a lot easier than most others. I hope that everyone will respect the animals and their wintering grounds, but you know that not everyone has the paitents or respect to give the animals some space.

I got a couple bucks as of yesterday on one of my trailcams, both with antlers afixed. I know others around here who've seen them dropped since 12/31. Just depends on where you are. I've spent a couple hours casually hiking my lowland (sea level) areas while checking trailcams, staying in the more open spots but haven't found anything but fresh bear peels (maple) and a few fawn kill bones, likely from coyotes. I worry more about the eastside of the state but we had a doozy of a storm over here too, and the animals had to be impacted somewhat.

If I could get Outfitter to give the okay I would pay good money to the person that could find my moose sheds, unfortunatly I don't want to give out the location of one of his honey holes so it may just be M-Ray, WF70 and I looking for them.

I'd do it for free Phool. Bad thing is is I am all over his honey holes already most likely. This year I'd really like to target moose, so guess where I will be spending my spring.

Here in farm land Montana the winters are easy for our deer, the big drop happens in mid-March. A cold snap, -20 below will pop a few but it is pointles to burn yourself out before there is a lot of bone on the ground. I am chomping at the bit to get out and look but you won't catch me out there before March 20. When I started shed hunting it was normal to find 20 antlers a day and never see a soul, but now all I find are boot tracks.

Man, don't let that crap go unspoken. Personally, I'd take the oppty to respectfully correct him right then and there. People like that are just greedy. Sea level, west side, lots of food and escape cover at every turn is one thing. Eastside animals have it a LOT harder, and people need to back the hell off and let them winter in peace. I"m all for the state regulating access if morons can't prove to be responsible and ethical.
