building my own smoker
« on: August 28, 2015, 08:53:30 PM »
gotta upgrade from my big chief. So far I am only a little over $100 into new material. The rest I had laying around the house. The exterior cedar is fence boards I had alongside my shed and planed down. Bought a used jenair cooktop for 30 bucks that I modified. Still have to do the vent, wheels and finish the wiring.

That's a fine looking smoker... what are you going to season it with?

Bought a used Jenair 4 burner cooktop and modified it. Using two of the burners. Cut and fabbed the cooktop enclosure to fit in the bottom of the smoker.

I can't wait to move back to Washington and build my own smoke house.  I think I am going to use a Bradley smoke generator for smoke, so that I can do cold smoking, and a coleman stove burner with a cast iron skillet and charcoal when I need to heat it up.

I am curious too. :P Once I get it all done, going to trial run it at lowest setting and highest to see what my range is. I am hoping for not much over 100 for low and to at least 350 on the high end.

Are you going to cut in a thermometer on the door?  I would do one high and low or are going to run in a probe line?

I am going to get an extra probe for my Fluke multi-meter and install it. Then I just have to plug it into my meter when in use. ;)

Did you insulate in the void between the siding and the plywood interior?

That was my question too.

Tagging along for the updates, this is on my list of things to do.  Love the stove top idea.  In fact I've got an outdoor 220v plug in location that would be perfect for a smoker I might just double the size and use all 4 burners.

Sweet!
Before you cut your vent hole locations check your temps at a couple height locations. Knowing your burner temps and cutting a couple adjustable vents can give you pretty good temp control.
Wireless thermometers are awesome  for both meat temps and inside temps.
Get that puppy resonated, lol
