cider press advise

I am hoping someone can give me advise on buying a good cider press.

You can pay $800 for a press with a grinder, or you can build your own for a lot less.  How much are you willing to spend?

There are kits/plans online that include all the metal (bands/screw/flanges) and you have to provide and cut the wood then assemble.
Also get some pretty old ratty ones and just swap out the wood, the metal is still good.

 few years ago I was ready to spend the money for a real nice professionally built apple press to make hard cider. I decided to build one instead. I looked at alot of homemade presses on the internet and figured out how I wanted to make mine. It only took a few afternoons.  $ I did it with all new materials for under $200. You could do it cheaper. You can use your car jack to apply pressure and use lattice and cloth bags instead of a perforated cylinder. Thats how I do it and in an afternoon I can get

Agree fastdam, lots of ways to skin that cat.  One I looked at used a trailer jack and a steel pail.  The concept is pretty simple--how to put a lot of pressure on apples to drive the juice out.

Buy a cheap (new) garbage disposal and mount it on a sheet of wood or plastic. BOOM!   there's your apple grinder for under $ 50.   Then put the grindings in heavy mesh or cloth bags. Then layer the bags between wooden "lattice" boards like a cake with layers. Squeeze out the juice and strain it.

I've got a press around here some where I'd sell cheap. The oak bucket is good, but I didn't see when I bought it the arm was repaired. So I never used it.
