taxidermist
« on: October 26, 2015, 11:24:36 AM »
Hi hunt wa. Don't know if this belongs in this section but I am looking for a taxidermy for my dad's deer mount. We usually take it to a place in North bend, the guy does nice work but a bit on the pricey side. I remember awhile back someone posted their mount that they got done by a retired taxidermy guy and he charged pretty cheap with good work. Just wondering if anyone knows a good taxidermist that doesn't charge to much. Ty

Those two things don't go together, good isn't cheap and cheap isn't good. If you want to have it done right take it to a guy that does it right, just because a guy can put a skin over a form doesn't make him a taxidermist and doesn't make it right and also because he or she charges alot doesn't mean it will be right either, If you don't really care what it looks like now or in the future just do a horn mount or a euro and save money that way! not on a shoulder mount. :twocents:

Ty for the  :twocents:  what I'm saying is that I've seen some members post their mounts and they look good and have said they got charged in the $300 range, while the place we have gone to charge $650+ not trying to take cheap over quality just looking for a place that doesn't charge as much with quality work. Hope you understand, not every taxidermist charge the same.

If you are happy with your current taxidermist . 650$ is about average for a reputable shoulder mount , and at that price they earn it if they are good . :twocents:

I'm sure your talking about Buzzy Cook at Olympic taxidermy.. Amazing work, but yes $$$. I would highly recommend Rick Mathess at Cedar River taxidermy. I believe he used to work with Buzzy and his work is just as good if not better, a little more reasonable on the pricing and a heck of a nice guy to boot! I have mounts from both and you can't go wrong either way. Good luck and congrats to your dad on the deer!

Good work is all relative to what a person thinks is good. That doesn't mean that it is. There are a lot of people and other guys that are called taxidermist that really don't know what good work is or care. Buzz and Ric  do a good job and are both good guys. everyone's prices are different because there overhead, pride, passion and experience is different.
