Dissapointing first bowhunt!
« on: September 02, 2015, 06:50:17 AM »
Well I went on my first bowhunt yesterday after work. Super excited didn't want to get my hopes up. I usually see no less than 15-20 deer every time I go out even in the off season when I go out scouting. I saw not 1 deer the whole time no fresh sign poop tracks nothin. I only found a 2 point chalky shed. It's really sandy where I hunt so I think all this wind covered up tracks. But not to see anything is really weird. I've never hunted in September. I normally Hunt muzzleloader at the end of November. Not sure if the deer are still around the farm lands this time of year and not out in the wilderness like normal? I also don't like afternoon hunting just never seems to pay off like goin out in the morning or being out all day. But I will have to wait for Saturday to do that. Gonna try my luck again tonight but im gonna stick to the edge of our farm this time.Hope to at least see something.

Keep at it. You will be learning that there are many differences in behavior around season times. The deer patterns change with the weather and pre and post rut times.
Keep the wind in your face and good luck

I have seen quite an uptick in deer activity of late over here. They may have hunkered down some because of the incoming weather?  :dunno:

Lots of time left to get a deer. Enjoy your time out in the desert.

If you're where I think you are, most years it's pretty void of deer in September.

Just keep with it and it will happen.. More time spent out the better. Do you have any trail cameras out?

No I don't have any trail cameras out. Maybe next year. Went out again tonight but a different spot where there is tons of trees and water farm fields all around. Saw a lil bit of sign a few days old but still no deer.  :dunno: might need to try a find a new area or just wait till modern and muzzleloader since I have a multi season tag. Not gonna give up though I'm just gettin started.

:yeah:
The night before the opener was super windy where we were with weather coming in.  Big drop in temperature on the opener and definitely not a lot of deer movement.  Give it a few more days and I bet you start to see some action.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Deer movement is way down in my area too.  Had a pretty steady 900 pics for a week soak, checked it today and there were only 350.  Has to be the weather.

In the same boat x4. Signs every where but no deer. As a newbie I guess we gotta just keep getting out there and grinding. Good luck!

I would guess that the sign you are seeing is not too fresh.  Fresh tracks are sharp and clear, fresh piles will stick to your boot.

I've walked into an area of beds that still felt warm to the touch and sticky poo (I always feel a nugget). All these spots are new to me so I made the mistake of just trying to cover a lot of ground each day instead of being quiet. But I also think if I go too slow, I won't see enough to understand the terrain they're working. Hoping I'll see more when I work these same spots a second time during late season.

At least everybody else is seeing sign! I have been out to my spot a total of 7 times now and only once did I see any sign. Was actually a decent buck track that was a few days old. But other than that nothin but porcupines and coyotes. I found a few does at the back of the farm but that's it. I think for my area all the deer r sticking to the corn fields and water sources. ? I have gotten to know my hunting area a lot better and have a few go to spots in mind. I also mapped out my kills over the past few years and a buddy of mine showed me where he has gotten his and all were within a 1/2 mile to 3/4 of a mile of each other. :) I just think it's strange that it is such a barren wasteland right now but Ive been out on opener for modern firearm and u r tripping over them. Guess I didn't know as much about deer as I thought! Haha I know my biggest problem is slowing down! I do good for a while super stealthy and high hopes! But then I get discouraged or start back to the truck and start to walk around like a bull moose and that's when I normally see something!!  Deff gonna hit it once more before end of bow season just to see what's up. Other than that hopefully I'm not too busy with harvest to go out for modern. Good luck

Yes. Bow and ML u can get does. 3 pt min for mulies any whitetail. Modern firearm is 3 pt min no does for mulies any whitetail. Don't see very many whitetail tho. I have promised myself I'm gonna hold out for a buck till muzzleloader season. I have a multi season tag and would really like to get a buck this year. But once ML season hits any legal deer is gonna get it! Thanks for the tip
