Good year for grouse
« on: September 04, 2015, 06:01:31 PM »
Been a good opening week for me.  My son and I both shot limits today.  Might go again on Sunday or just give it a rest.  Today it was 3 Ruffs and 5 Blues..

Saw a bunch today here in Colorado. How are they for eating?

Guys, what elevation and types of areas are you finding Blues in this year? After two full days hunting river bottoms and forests in GMUs 335 & 336 I've seen two birds.  Areas have berries, water, roosting trees, and gravel yet no birds. Me and my setter are perplexed.

Went out yesterday Olympic unit 621 and didn't see one bird or rabbit. We didn't even get teased by a flush of noise they make. We called it about noon. We hunted both high and low and no luck at all. We figured we give it another go in a few weeks. We did however see a deer so I guess it wasn't a complete waste of trip.

Nice brace of birds 87Ford. Any help with my question below? not looking for your secret spots just general guidance on where you're seeing birds: e.g. "around 1500 feet, south facing slopes, look for running water & snow berries etc". Thanks in advance

Shot 3 nice ones over Delia (Avatar pup) on Saturday.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

scottr,
We generally hunt the same areas every year..  I don't put a whole lot of thought into water, food, etc, but typically like gated/overgrown roads.  We've been hunting from about 2000ft and up.  Sunday, a friend shot a Blue at about 2400ft and I shot a Ruff at just under 4000ft.  Today we didn't even see a grouse  :dunno:

Thanks. What mountains are you hunting? east or westside?

I think I need to get off the beaten path more, places I'm going might be getting too much pressure from other people (hikers, horseback riders etc).
