Northeast Black Bear down!!!
« on: September 06, 2015, 09:30:59 PM »
Headed to Northport, Washington with my Uncle Jim Thursday evening and hunted Friday, Saturday, Sunday for Black Bear. Friday I went to a good canyon that I knew held bears in the past and sat their for the day glassing the berry and hazlenut bushes from a far. I saw one small bear heading out of the canyon at the very top which is right at 415 yards, but didn't have enough time to get the rifle up to make a ethical shot atempt :bash:. I walked back to our camp the 6.5 miles in high spirits for the next days hunt. The next morning it was a downpoor of rain and was very wet and chilly. Finaly about 10:45 the rain gave way and I decided to make my way up the logging road the 6.5 miles back to my favorite canyon. I got up their, got settled and glassed for the next 4 hours. Unfortunately I saw nothing at all. About 4pm I decided to cut down above the Columbia River and walk one of the old roads that head through some productive flats. It was about 5:10 pm and I was stalking through the woods very carfully when I heard a loud "snap" I looked to my left and saw a bear running through the ferns twoard the really thick and nasty stuff :yike:. I saw a quick opening I could shoot through, so I through my rifle in front of her for a running shot. As soon as she passed the big tree into my scopes view I put the cross hairs on the front leg and pulled the trigger on my Remington 700 30-06. The 150 grain Hornady GMX bullet found its mark in a shoulder shot, bear down hard! :IBCOOL: It is only my secound bear ever. A very nice sow, but never the less a bear. I snapped a quick pick, gutted the bear and drug her across the skidder road to the main road, and took her the remaining 3.5 miles back to camp. I skinned it back in camp, and will make a rug for my son for a gift. It was a fun hunt, I truly enjoy that area whether or not if I harvest an animal. The scenery is beautiful, and the hunting is even better. Thanks for taking time to read my story, and good luck to all still hunting for one of their own.

Congrats - any legal bear is a good bear in my book!
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Thanks everyone I've hunted bear since I was 16 in this area, truly a trophy of a lifetime for me and a vast area by the US/Canadian  border, some fantastic grouse hunting as well as fishing in September. Took the sow into the butchers it weighed 193lbs hanging skinned/field dressed, so around 320 lbs live weight! A BIG LADY :chuckle:

Nice job! One of my friends has a cabin and some property north west of Kettle Falls and I love hunting that area. I am originally from that side of the state and miss being able to hunt all my old favorite areas.

Keep up the good work! On to deer season for you?

Yep, Im very excited! My son Elijah, 8 years old, just passed hunters education and I will take him to Rearden for his first deer hunt. Of course Dad will have a tag to, should have a lot of meat this winter with 2 deer and a bear. Lol, I need another deep freezer.
