My wife sent me this pic from an outfitter's page.

My great granparents had interests in some caneries up in Alaska during the 1930,s into the 50,s. Morris was a cousin of my great grandmother and would make trips to Washington to duck hunt and deer hunt from time to time with my grandparents. My family has lots of pics of this bear and pics of others these two killed. This one is a Kodiak and was killed near Olga bay. My great grandma seen it alive twice and said it looked like it was the size of a car moving through the brush. Bill and Morris were hunting machines and were the best bear guys around.

lol If you want to read a good book buy Pinnell and Talifson: Last of the Great Brown Bear Men by Marvin Clark. Lots of really neat old pics of huge bears.

These guys were the real deal. They would walk half way across the island packing bear hides and camp on their backs wearing rubber boots.

I have read and reread books on these guys, The Last of the Great Brown Bear men is great.
To have been there.....[/

Here's a good book, can't put it down once you start it. Warning, this book will give you nightmares.

Here is a pic of one that Bill got up there, another bruiser Kodiak.  I love this picture, the measurements of this bear that my great grandma has written on the back are faded to the point that they are not readable, lets just say its BIG!

And yes, the first pic I posted  of the bear Bill killed with the rifle leaning on it, is an octagon barrel 30-30 believe it or not.

The bear on the cannery wall that was killed by Morris in 49 was measured by a U.S.F and game agent by the name of Frank Beals who was also a good friend of my great grandparents. The skull measured at 18 and 3/4. The hide was displayed at Herb Kleins museum in Dallas and the skull was given to Beals. This bear was actually reported to be a world record in 49 but there was another bear taken a year earlier by a fella named Reeves I believe that actually beat this one out by a quarter or a half inch :dunno:

Hey Mac thanks for the cool pic's and story! Anyone ever been to a place in Nevada that has a huge taxidermied polar bear? Full body mount on it's hind leg's. I vaguely remember seeing it when I was like 5yrs old but don't remember where it was. I remember my dad saying it was a record at one time.
