Seems similar to what I hear hillman's FF is like l, but i haven't seen that dvd of his. I'm FF'ing my 6.5 month BLM and seems like with the more traditional ear pinch there is a lot more compulsion to reach for the bumper. We worked hold and then force hold for several weeks before we went into FF. I was told you wanna get done with FF as fast as you can and the way to do that for me is to use the right amount of pressure for the dog to give the right response. Maybe it's a different ball game with non retriever breeds? Looks interesting but what tool are you gaining for when you dog drops a bird in the field?

Probably the same one as when competing in a shoot to retrieve event. None.

I see your point, and I only watched the first 15 mins of the video, but wouldn't you want the fetch command in your pocket for training? Like when a dog gets out of the water and is about to drop the bird to shake, "hold" and "fetch" would be nice to have. Seems like a nice low pressure system of teaching a former of FF though. For sure keeps a good attitude and the dogs.

Colin-Time frame should be the same for any breed, as fast as you can go to get good dog work in. That comes from Andy too.

I'd call it a forced hold. The dog they called finished force (FF) is what I look for after I finish hold. Its probably good enough for what many people do. For advanced work, the foundation of FF translates far beyond picking up a dropped bird on a shoreline after shaking off or, simply retrieving to hand. FF is part of the beginning of a structured program and lifetime habits.

In the retriever world, there is not a dog trained to the highest level who has not been FF'd and collar conditioned. (CC'd). For pointing dogs, a hold and willingness to pick a bird up off the ground is good enough for many.

Because a dog picks up a bird on the command "fetch" does NOT mean the dog has compleded FF. Dogs don't know english.
