Naneum cow 9/20/15 at 7:15 am. 32 yd shot went 25yds and fell back down hill. Doubled lunged, heart and broke left front leg. All on film is the cool part. 1 1/2 mile drag out.

When you guys say 1.5 mile drag out are you doing this whole?  Sounds like way too much work.

Yeah elkrunner we did with this cow. Got her in a burn scar so didn't want to gut her and drag getting meat dirty. Wasn't to bad mostly down and across a flat.

Sounds like you guys need to start quartering them out.

1 1/2 mile drag? A full size cow elk?  :yike:

I wouldn't drag a deer even half that far. Man! How was your back after that? :o

Daughter's first elk at age 13.  Took Veteran's day off for the first time since I got out the military 21 years ago to spend the day with her, the wife and the youngest daughter in the woods hunting.

Awesome day for sure.

Favorite quote so far, "these are a lot bigger than deer."  :chuckle:

Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Sorry I'm a little late to post this, first time I saw that there was a cow thread which is awesome by the way. Why should it just always be about horn porn right??  ML Ryderwood cow special permit tag.  She has been delicious!

How was ryderwood this year?  Plenty of elk?  Last time I hunted ryderwood was when I was 15 with a youth doe tag.  Saw quite a few elk back then.

Nice Shot jbeaumont21!

Thank you!   She only ran about 20 yards before she piled up nice and close to a logging road.  Love it when it happens like that  ;)

Ryderwood seemed busier with hunters this year than in the past.  I've been hunting that unit for the past 7 years, biking in on the Sierra Pacific land and this year I ran into hunters around every corner. I was hoping with all the extra units open this year that there would be less people in Ryderwood. Guess everyone else had the same idea lol.  A couple of times I ran into hunters down on spur roads at first light that I know did not bike or hike in the same way I did.  They had to have come up from the bottom.  I think SP still has a problem with people on quads sneaking in through the creek bottoms. Gets pretty frustrating for those of us who work hard to get back in there.

As far as elk they seemed pretty sparse this year. I saw a number of bulls early on while bear hunting but I think the bow hunters thinned most of them out.  Out of our party of 4 we got 1 bull and my cow. One of our guys clean missed a bull at 80 yards otherwise would have had another.   I didn't get my cow until the second to last day of season. Just happy to have gotten my meat since us muzzle loaders no longer have a late season in the Coweeman.
