High shot

My buddy shot a bull tonight around 7:00 at 25 yards and he hit pretty high.it was right behind the shoulder but it looked like it hit right under the spine.we went to where it was standing and couldn't find any blood so we backed out and we are going to wait for the morning to look for it. Do you guys think he went far? We heard him going through the brush for about 100 yards then it sounded like he stopped.

Dead space a little high, sounds like they don't die from a hit in that area.

There is mystery gap right under the spine and above the lungs. If you hit a critter there a lot of the time you will never find them. As there is not much vital there. If it did not cut a artery or top of the lungs he is probably still going. I have seen animals survive that shot as well. Hopefully he will be piled up for you guys and get got something good.

Yeah I hope we find him dead but the no blood is scaring me.

Hmm.  My first ever bow kill was a deer this year on my birthday with my new birthday bow(archery not gift wrap paraphenalia).  That arrow hit and sounded like thumping a melon to check ripeness.  I didn't know it at that moment but I had hit high right behind the shoulder at about a 45 degree angle.   That critter took off like a rocket.  I walked to where the deer was when the shot took place and found my very bloody arrow.  I got impatient since it was my first archery deer so I walked in the direction it had run.  In about 70 yards I found it completely expired.  It had run a total of 100-110 yards before starting back down hill a bit, eventually just going down.  The mechanical broadhead I had used was devestating.  Large hole in, huge hole going out due to quartering shot.  Cut the veins along the backbone and bled out internally.  So... it is hard telling.  I hope you go to the spot you were at tom orrow and find your bull.

I had no blood on the ground at the site where the deer was shot.  Only on the arrow.  The first sign of blood was after running 90 yards.

The arrow didn't go all the way through. We were in a tree stand so hopefully it touched the top of his lungs. When he turned we seen the arrow sticking out both sides of him

Don't get too down about it.  You might still find him alive.  If he's healthy, he'll still be living in the same area.  Boneaddict killed a buck that he'd "windowed" days earlier.  That was at 6000 ft    keep looking for him and keep hunting him

If you cant find blood, look for kick out tracks where he ran off and follow those as far as possible, sometimes you'll find a bull piled up at the end of it. I shot a mule buck high 4 years ago and never did find him. Just go back and search as hard as possible, you owe that to the elk. If you don't find it chances are it will be just fine. Lost a spike buck due to that hit last year, never bled until the arrow fell out and when it did it was droplets about the size of my pinky nail. Never got any larger then he decided to kick up  a herd of elk who decided to rototil  the trail. Never did find him, don;t know if it was mortal or not.

Go back and look and look and look. I found the biggest bull I have killed after a high shot. I think that the lungs don't fill up to the drain hole for a while on a high shot or the arrow had it plugged. I followed this bull I talk of for a mile in tracks and all of the sudden big blood. Don't give up! Just my opinion....

Since he was shot from a tree stand I wouldn't be surprised if you got him with the angle.  spend all day looking.
