knock down power
« on: January 15, 2009, 03:35:53 PM »
the 300wsm does it have the knock down power and long range shooting as the regular 300 mag. ? the reason I'm asking is cause I'm looking at buying a new gun after getting my first elk this year with my 270. and thinking about moving to Montana i just want the knock down power and the distance.

300 win and 300WSM are basically identical ballistically. How did your .270 do on the elk?

well at a hundred and twenty yards threw the back of the head it did real good...
but i didn't have confidence at four hundred yards to put the animal down there was to much drop in power and luckily after tracking her for five miles i got a good shot in

no real difference other than you get a shorter lighter rifle with that set up. that is all.

My nephew on here, shot his last year with a 300 wssm.  400 yards, dropped him in his tracks, like he was poleaxed.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

I would concentrate on shot placement. The .270 has a better flight path and will be more accurate at longer ranges. You could be shooting a cannon, but if the point of impact is not in a kill zone, the result could be a lost animal.

Seriously Jeepasaurusrex?  A better flight path and more accurate at longer ranges?
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

I was half asleep when I posted that. I misread the original post and for some reason had .308 in my head.

I stand retarded.  :chuckle:

If you already have a .270 Win, I'd suggest you get a .338 Win mag for a dedicated elk rifle.

Back to the point though, the 300WM and 300WSM are pretty close ballistically, although the 300WM has a slight edge in velocity.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

If you already have a .270 Win... I'd suggest you pocket the money you'd spend on another rifle... and use it for an out of state hunt... that way you could clobber two elk!

JoshT, now that's good thinking right there! I'd take an elk hunt over another rifle any day.
