Bear over bait for young hunter
« on: September 18, 2015, 10:16:37 AM »
So I know this topic could open a pretty heated discussion about fair chase BUT heres the deal,
I have a young son who has a high interest in hunting/shooting a bear. With the fall season winding down I have looked into hunting on Quinault reservation over bait for him, I'm not shooting. Anyone have experience with the guides they would like to share?
Thanks

There are a few threads on here. I'd love to read the thread about his hunt. Keep up posted and good luck to him.

My neighbor's daughter did this hunt 2x. I think she got about 200 lb's of bear between the two ( live weight) - and it cost a pretty penny. she did it the second time to get a bigger bear--it was actually smaller than the first!
So  wait for a shooter would be my advice if you do it. BTw her dad, not the guide encouraged her to shoot both times- the guide just  put them on the stand I think, then let them hunt. I think she had her bear within hours.

You don't need a guide or bait to get a bear. My son will be 9 next fall and will be going on his first bear hunt next fall. Find berries you'll find bears. Spot and stalk more rewarding and funner than sitting in a stand waiting. Sorry but to me that is boring, and kids get restless easily. I honesty belive your kud would have more fun spot and stalk method. Maybe it's just me or maybe my family is athletic and restless. Either way your going good luck to you, and if your going to do a guided hunt go with Bearpaw, there a great guide service.

Bait hunting bear with a knowledgeable guide would be great for any hunter, especially a youngster. I have some connections with the Quinaults and could probably get you a recommendation for a good guide if you need it. Best of luck.

I hunted with bear claw guide service on the Quinalt reservation four years ago.  Nothing but good things to say about the service and the hunt.  Lots of bear and lots of opportunity for a shot.  If you sit with your child and make sure they pick a trophy animal you wont be disappointed.

Sounds like a good outfitter to use.

I say go for it. If your kid is showing interest in hunting, take advantage of that.
Bear hunting is a blast, it don't matter if it's in a stand over bait or from one hillside to the next. Iv taken one bear while in a stand, I was sitting over a few Apple trees. Was one of the more memorable and rewarding  hunts I have. It's tough, but what these guys are sayn about the guide service , I'd say give it a try. Do whatever it takes ( legally that is) to get you kid hooked.

Well, we went for it and had an awesome hunt with Mega Bear Guide Service and Edmund Quilt. He works hard and put us where we needed to be get our opportunity. Saw several bear and had a chance at two large boars. I can say that the biggest challenge for a young hunter is to quietly sit still but in our case it payed off.
340 lb. Boar. One shot from 65-70 yards dropped in his tracks!
