Hunting allowed on Sauk Mountain?
« on: September 24, 2015, 12:12:56 AM »
Was heading up to Sauk Mountain to do some hunting.  As I turned onto the road there is a "No Hunting" sign posted on the wood sign.  This doesn't look like an official sign (not metal, no RCW referenced).  I was wondering if this is something some antis posted?  As far as I know this area should be legal as it's National Forest land.  I know a hiker was killed up there a few years back, wondering if this was something that is a reaction to it?

Do "No Hunting" signs have force of law on public lands?  If the DNR or Forest service were to close down an area to a particular activity but not to another (such as hiking), how would one know?

Thanks in advance.

I have heard from other people, Sauk Mountain is a popular hiking area for yuppie/greenie types, so I wouldn't be surprised if some random person put that sign up hoping to discourage hunters from gong up there. I haven't seen anywhere that it's closed  :dunno:

Even if no RCW is listed, it should have the WDFW logo or the issuing authorities logo on it.

Page 48 of the regs says its closed to Elk.

Betting its just hikers taking it upon themselves. I'd call the WDFW and ask.

Lower section of the road is private on both sides. You have to get past the first gate on the left before you can get off the road into the woods. Lots of traffic and lots of hikers that look sideways at you when you haul an animal off the mountain. :chuckle:

Most counties have iMap or something similar.  It  can really help and explains a lot of issues.

That sign is for the state park land you go thru the first mile+ on the right side, The land on the left is private (cattle are in those woods)for a ways then turns state, then back to private. So basically everything on the right is not huntable till after the first gate on Grandy timber co gate. There is a small sigh on the left telling you that you are leaving state park land, then everything on the left is huntable.

That's along ways to come to hunt such a small area. :dunno:

Thanks for the responses guys, that is helpful (sounds like it is just some greenies up to their tricks).  I'll make sure I stay on the state/national forest land.

Boss .300 winmag- it looks like once you get up the road a little ways, it's all National Forest land (public) and then aside from a couple blocks of land, it's mostly National Forest land on the left too.  I've checked a couple different websites with landowner info and this is what I've found.  Seems like a pretty good area on the right with lots of room at least?

Be aware the greenies up there are extra sensitive due to the fact a young bear hunter shot a hiker up there few years ago on the Sauk Mt. Trail.

The 3 gates on the left above the park belong to Grandy Lk Timber as per Boss300.  They suffer significant bear damage in there.  Above those you should be good to go.  If you go to the top and drop off the other side you get into some pretty nice country.  Never saw lots of deer but some big ones up there.  And you are away from hikers....
