49 Degrees North Moose Scouting
« on: September 21, 2015, 05:57:46 PM »
Well, just got back from scouting the unit.  Spent all day on Saturday driving, hiking and glassing the unit with a focus on the areas that forum members suggested.  Time well spent.....although I didn't see any moose, it was great getting in there and understanding access points, etc.   In particular, driving and hiking the areas around the ski resort yielded lots of moose sign....plenty of droppings, tracks, etc.

What was really surprising to me was the amount of whitetail and turkey in that unit.  I grew up hunting both back east and I've never seen anything like it.  We counted over 50 whitetail- mostly does- and lost count after 200 turkeys.  Crazy.

Thanks again for the suggestions, forum members.  I figure another scouting trip may be in order but am guessing as the weather cools and the foliage drops, it will be easier to find moose on the next trip in.

Does anyone know the name of the lumber company in 49 DN?  I vaguely remember Sympson or Stympson signs when I was in the unit, but can't find anything when I google.  Want to give those guys a call and get current information of access.  Heading over in a week and getting pumped!

Thanks for the response. So I'm assuming you park in a way that doesn't block the gate and walk in?  No permits or permission needed?

Well, my hunt is finally here!  Heading in tomorrow afternoon with Dad and a buddy for eight days of fun.  Thank you again to forum members for their advice and input. We'll be checking out the areas suggested, but are wide open to any last-minute advice or intel, so feel free to reach out here or on my cell at 206-931-7086.   If anyone sees a good one hanging out (and likes moose meat ) let me know!  All the best to forum members still out there hunting and congratulations to folks that already have meat in the freezer.
