First Successful Deer Hunt
« on: September 23, 2015, 06:02:09 AM »
This was my first time hunting alone and my first deer. I have been hunting the last three years but it took some time learning how to work the deer that travel through our property. Last year I was close but missed a long shot because I didn't gauge the distance really well.

This year I setup a ground blind at a choke point for the deer that travel through the area sucked since I get out there at night and their are 4 deer sitting just up the hill from me while I setup the blind in the dark I will see them in the daylight. The next day I get out to the blind and while I'm waiting for a group of deer to cross the road that runs the side of our property the weekend road hunters drive by and one jumps out and crosses into my neighbors property and chase the deer away. Normally they would come back but he chased them for a good 30 min and I didn't see them again. The road hunters also continued to patrol the road waiting for them to come back even after I stop them on the road and let them know that the land was private they didn't seem to care. Not much I could do since its not my land they are getting on and the homeowners were not home they also didn't have it posted no trespassing, this pretty much killed day 1.

Day 2 I get out to the blind late and the deer are eating around my blind I tried to get close but they seemed like they were spooked already once the sighted me the booked right away normally they don't think twice about us and continue to eat. I know their schedule now instead of making attempts to track them down I decided to attempt bear hunting up in the hills by the house with my new call from rrcalls it works well I didn't see any bear but called a coyote in but didn't want to shoot him with my 30-06. called it a day and focused back on deer hunting.

Day 3 I get out nice and early before first light and laid down some feed. I had my shooting lane nice and open. The first deer I see ends up coming on the opposite side of the blind and I don't have any windows open to shoot out of. Then the second deer comes up on that side and I have to attempt to open the window to get a shot. After the first deer walks I know I need to get it done when a third deer shows up I make the move and unzip the window quickly. The second deer is now walking away, but the third deer stayed it I take aim and make the 40 yrd shot. I watch the deer run about 60 yrds in a big circle and drop to the ground I hit right between the ribs hitting the lungs and passing all the way through. Had her skinned out and quartered by 11 and I was on my way home Monday afternoon. My wife wasn't expecting me home till tonight so she was happy.

Finished cutting her up yesterday and while she was smaller then the first two deer she was still a good size doe. Ill be grinding up the trimmings tonight for burger so Ill see total meat weight. Sorry I didn't take any photos since I was hunting alone.
