We lost another legend - Jim Dougherty
« on: September 23, 2015, 07:07:35 PM »
In 1984 I became good friends with Doug Walker.  As wonderful as that was the fringe benefits of being Dougs friend were almost too countless to remember.  One of those benefits was that if you were Dougs friend you spent a lot of time with the Legend, the Master, and the Jokester Jim Dougherty!

For a good many years Dougherty tolerated me at hunting camps, trade shows and Get-to-gethers.  And Doug loved having a lot of Get-to-gethers.  I'm sure I was that annoying young kid that asked way too many questions.  But he graciously answered them all.

Then one year while passing the Jack around the camp fire...it happened.  We made a connection that took us past simply having a mutual friend.  Not sure it was friendship, but it certainly became our bond.  I was part of the Dougherty inner circle!!   All it took was a mutual dislike of a P&Y member  :chuckle:

Ever since that day we have had an inside joke.  Spoken only upon meeting up after a long absence.  I will forever be greatful for the time we spent together.  He was a true legend to archery, varmint hunting and writing.  How lucky am I to have known him?  Not sure any words could express.

"I would like to Rise and address that question!"   "Your an ass.  Sit down!"

To meet you was a blessing.  To hunt with you was to watch perfection.  To drink with you was to experience laughter at it's fullest.  I will miss you sir.  Thank you for all the time and advice you gave me.  It meant everything to this kid!

He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I think I still have one of his books on a shelf or in a box. I remember thinking of it as sort of a "bible" of archery hunting over 25 years ago when I started pulling my first Martin bow.

Losing friends as we age is a bittersweet experience.
Peace be with you.

Remember him saying that in regard to varmint hunting, 1 man was a hunter, 2 guys were a team and any more was a, uh how shall I put put this, how about less than optimal.   :chuckle:

RIP Jim
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.
