general season dates
« on: September 23, 2015, 07:17:52 PM »
I noticed that for general season modern the dates have been extended 2 extra days for mule deer. Anyone know why? for as long as I can remember last day of general for mule deer was always sunday, but this year its Tuesday. I am just curious. more days to hunt cant complain. ;)

Nothing to do with blacktail season. They added two days because hunters requested a longer season. The blacktail season wasn't shortened, but it is shorter than it was last year. It's just due to the way the dates fall on the calendar.

Exactly right. Last years season was awesome. Why shorten it this year? Throw the blacktail guys a bone and give us the first two days of December!

I'd be all for that. Especially now that access into most areas is limited by the timber companies. Oregon's blacktail season sometimes runs to November 6th or 7th.  :o

If we had 2-3 more days to hunt into the first week of November, we would see some real hogs hitting the dirt.

Oh no you don't  ......... Extending the season dates would play total havoc with WDFW's well thought out and essentially perfect management plan for Washington's well studied blacktail deer populations.  We can't have that!

that would be sweet. Even if they did it every other year,  or third year. Every third year make the blacktail season be the last week of October thru the first week of November.

If that happened I could see them going to east/west with deer like they do elk. There would be some mashers taken.

Why are we talking about blactails when the OP was asking about mule deer? :dunno: I think the extra 2 days is fantastic, atleast for us on the Eastside. Should be a good year to tag a nice mule deer if your hunting area(s) having been burned up by the fires. Plenty of days for ANY species of deer, especially with a modern firearm.

I say it would be a bad idea to extend BT season. There would be some PIGS that would be killed, but all that does is remove they're genes from the pool. It would also be too easy. I say keep it where it is so that you have to work for it and really know your stuff. This way if a toad goes bottom up you know you deserved it. We don't want every yahoo and his mom out in the woods rattling a bit and then gut shotting a trophy because he doesn't know what he's doing. That's just my  :twocents: keep it hard. I archery hunt so my season is even worse.

Agreed somewhat. Archery season worse? I've seen more trophy blacktails during late archery in the snow than during any other season.

We're all talking about blacktails because they are cooler than mulies. :chuckle:

This is where we agree to disagree. But I live on the East side, and we have better deer hunting all together. No contest there. Mulies over blactails all day, every day! A medium mule deer buck is as big as a huge blactail buck. To each their own. For me I LOVE mule deer!

I just meant as far as the rut goes. I think it would be easier to get a nice rutting buck in late October than even the first day of late archery. That being said, some toads have definitley gone down Once those leaves drop and the snow hits the ground. I'm sitting in my treestand and just heard a crash,  :chuckle: hopefully he gets out into the open.
