The lung shot bull was not found? Was the first bull counted as a dead bull, or probably only wounded with a lung shot? I got the impression from the story that your buddy lung shot a bull that will probably die, you spent days looking for the animal, which is the right thing to do. Then your buddy shot and killed this bull. He didn't notch his tag after the first bull even though it was not found?

You can't put your tag on an animal you don't recover. I said notch the tag, as in, you've killed a bull. The question I bring up is, if you know you killed an animal but cannot find that animal is it ethical to go kill another one that season?

If you don't recover the animal or see it dead you don't know that it died...purely speculative.  I've killed bulls and upon butchering them found broad heads and bullets from previous years hunters.

It is up to the individual whether they keep hunting.

My  :twocents:; however, if I were to track an animal for a couple days and not locate the animal there are a couple scenarios.  One, the shot placement did not hit where I thought and I just injured the animal in a recoverable/heal able state or two, I did not search long enough to locate/lost the trail and can't locate.  Again, the likelihood of a missed vital.  Either way, the hunter never found an injured or deceased animal after two days, I believe he was correct to continue.

Is it even legal to notch a tag if you didn't harvest an animal?  What would an officer do if you had a notched tag in your possession, but no animal?
