They are close, but not the same. Bore diameter is the big difference... 0.456" vs 0.480"

Wikipedia covers just about all chamberings, you can find just about any info you need there:

They're not interchangeable and the bore diameter are commonly .429 for the 44 and .454 for the 45 Colt. As to which is more powerful, that really depends. The 44 is a much newer round compared to the 45 colt. So the baseline SAAMI pressures are higher for the 44 mag as they don't have to worry about 44 mags being built in the age of black powder. Off the shelf ammo for the 44 will usually be hotter rounds while most 45 colt rounds will be loaded to be safe in older pistols (think Peace Makers from before 1900). In modern guns, loaded to the same pressures they're close to a wash. There might be a slight edge to a 45 though (if memory serves me correctly) that if you run the same weight bullet to the same velocity in both, that the 45 will have slightly less pressure do to slightly less bearing surface of the fatter bullet in the barrel.

45lc is loaded to lower pressures than 44mag.....but has the potential to be more powerful than the 44.....in guns that can handle it  (ruger, freedom, rifles....etc)

A 45LC in a Ruger with a Bisley grip, loaded to its potential, is a fun hand cannon!

Off the shelf 44 mag is more powerful and more common with the more powerful chambering. you can find hi-pressure 45LC that is just as powerful but its less common and more expensive in comparison. Garrett makes some wicked fast 45LC for about $2 a bullet.

If you are looking for something for hunting/defense I would say 44mag is the better option. you can use 44mag for hunting and use 44 special out of the same gun for defense purposes.

Or, you could pick up a S&W 460 and trump them both.  But, the X frame S&W is rather large-ish and heavy.

If you're looking for a packable 44mag, that new five shot S&W model 69 Combat is sweet!  I'd like to pick one up myself but if Mongo Hunter talks me into buying one more gun, I'll be sleeping in a van, down by the river. :o

She will only put you in the van IF she knows you bought it :)

That 69 looks like a sweet shooter. if they made one with like a 2" or 3" barrel with the all smooth cylinder I would be all over that!
