Hevi Shot Hevi Metal #4's on geese
«

September 28, 2015, 04:47:15 PM »
Just seeing if any of you guys have experience with Hevi-Metal #4's on geese. I'm getting tired of bring 2 different shells out with me, so I'm looking to consolidate to one shell.
Thanks,
T

the heavy metal shells have a smaller shot equivalent "heavy shot" in them than the box lists. so for a #4 there would be something like #4 steel, and #6 or 8 hevi shot inside, not good for goose.

I wouldn't use them on geese unless in a pit or layout landing geese. I have had a few geese come in at 30-35 yards that lost a lot of feathers that made it out of sight with 4's. Under 18 yards would probably be fine. Areas where I had a good mix of duck and geese I just used #1's or BB's. That worked great!

Thanks for the replys. Just out of curiosity what brand of shell do you shoot? As far as I know Hevi Shot doesnt make #1 shells. I know Kent makes #1's but I've had spotty luck with there loads in the past.

Thanks for the info. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a case of Hevi-Metal #2's and a case of BB's.

Check your Heavy Metal shells when you unbox them. I bought several boxes of BB years ago to try them out. 2 different boxes had one or more shells that had very little shot in them, was easy to tell cuz the crimp was very concave. I shot an email off to environmetal industries with photos explaining what had happened, have never heard a word back form them. Still have the shells if they are interested. Makes me a bit weary of their quality control.
Just checkem over and be careful of squib loads.

Heavy metal is a combo of steel and hevi shot. Heavy steel is just steel shot but thier brand.

I love Hevi-Metal. Pick your shot size by the number listed but keep in mind that that number is the steel shot size. The Hevi-shot size will be 2 sizes smaller. IE: Hevi-Metal 3's will have Hevi-shot 5's on top of steel 3's.
It's a great design because on long shots, as the steel pellets start to slow down, the Hevi-shot pellets maintain their energy and speed because of their density and continue on w/deadly results without being impeded by the steel pellets.
If this load was reversed, the steel pellets would impeded the Hevi-shot pellets and cause inconsistent patterns.

I use Kent fasteel #2 for my all around. The Kents pattern great. I've never had an issue with them, and they kill whatever you hit!

I use Kent # 2 as well.just got back from bass pro picking up a few new boxes of Kent actually. They pattern best out of my gun and kill what they hit. I tried to shoot the heavy shot heavy metal to see how they performed and could not get a good patterning when I tried to pattern them. Others have had good luck with them though.
