I believe as long as he uses a legal primer it meets the requirements

I would go with the disc also. Holiday sports in Burlington carry the Knight's.

Check out Muzzleloaders.com.  They are great.  As long as they have what you are looking for, I would bet they would make sure you get your gun ASAP.  Last year they shipped me out a replacement rifle just days before the season started.  They are members here too user name is Myrtle Creek Inc.  Good Luck!

I am the proud new owner of a knight Big Horn with musket caps.  I thought it served all of my purposes for a little bit less than the disc.  I got a Williams Peepsight for it as well

Nice choice have hunted with a bighorn for years with the Williams peep. I love it and have had zero issues!

Heck! that is a good setup - it will serve you well.  The only problem you might have is keeping them dang Musket caps on the nipple - probably have to squeeze them a bit before you put them in the capper.  That is why I use #11 Mags. + on the right nipple they become waterproof.

I've got the nipple for #11 as well if I choose.  We'll see (I've got fat fingers and small things are hard to keep a handle on).

The DISC was nice, but at $120 more for the same barrel, I decided it was time to be a little cheap.  I spent most of the money I saved on the Williams peep.

Last minute stuff costs more than you plan, but I think it'll fire when that 6x6 walks out in front of me and that is what I need.

Thanks for everyone's help (especially Sabotloader).

Now that I have a .50, I have so many bullet choices.  What to do!?!

I've got some .348 grain powerbelts and some great plains as well.  Guy at the store seemed to like them, even though I was drawn to the TC sabots.

Go with the 300 grain bloodlines and you wont regret it. They are a little spendy but its worth it  :twocents:

you really do not have much time to find a bullet and sabot that fit so you pretty much are stuck at the mercy of what somebody locally has to offer.

When you do get the time and chance look at the Lehigh Defense .458x305 gr. CF

http://www.lehighdefense.com/collections/bullets/products/458-controlled-fracturing-305gr-bullet?variant=1073755480

This bullet is a real rifle bullet built for the 45-70.  It is a bit smaller in diameter than is the Bloodline 300 so I am not sure what sabot you might need to use. Either the standard Orange MMP 458x50 or like in my case in my knights I use a Black MMP HPH-24 to get a good fit.

Later in the year Lehigh will have a 300 grain CF for a ML on the web also.

Make sure you clean the bore of that new ML very well it will have some real crappy looking stuff in it.  Do not use a bore brush in yet as the Bore Tek coating will not be cured until you shoot 10-15 rounds out of it.

A bullet that you might find available at the rifle reloading places is the .458x300 Sierra FN HP. that bullets shoots very well and again is a 45-70 rifle bullet.  It will work well for you this year and then you will have time to do some experimenting later.

This is a target I shot the other day using those bullets - I shot a Knight MK-85 which is the baby brother of your Bighorn.  Only a 50 yard target and the first time that I have shot this reclaimed rifle but you can see the bullet shoots well and the Buffalo hunters tell the bullet works well on Buf.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!
