Late season grouse
« on: October 02, 2015, 09:43:47 AM »
Hi guys,
How long do you guys continue grouse hunting? Haven't bagged a limit yet (infact I'm completely new to this type of hunting, and have only killed one). But, I found a few areas that seem to have a good population of birds, and was wondering if time is running out. Do people still kill limits into November and December? Any feed back is appreciated, thanks.

Early limits are more common than late limits for me.  Less young of the year birds for me to shoot I'm guessing.

Remember, ruffed grouse start the Fall shuffle right about now. They'll be dispersing until later in November when they start to bunch up again. It can make it seem like they vanished in October. They are also adjusting to changing cover and food sources, where you find them will change.

In some ways late season is easier, the leaves are knocked down and the going a little easier. At least if you aren't road hunting them.

I only started hunting them this year, too, but I'm always seeing tons of them while elk and late deer hunting. And no, I haven't seen very many in the past couple of weeks, but I know they're around somewhere. I took a shot at one and missed last year on the very last day of the season.

I think they get a little easier late in the season when there is more rain.  They still have to eat and do so during the daylight and usually not while raining.  So, they can't be as picky for their feeding times.
