Quail, Chukar, Hun Opener 10/3/2015

Anyone getting out for the Quail, Chukar, Hun Opener? Personally, I find the rather Summer-like weather to be distracting to my hunting focus.

Any BIG PLANS?

I thought about chasing some quail and huns down by you Tom, but I think I'm going to chase so grouse instead.  Down by you this summer, I saw quite a few coveys of Huns though.

Over here on the far east side of the state, I am pleased to say that I saw more birds opening day than I have seen in the past 10 - 15 yrs.  Easy winter and lack of cloud bursts during nesting was a huge help.  Any brushy draw with a spring still holding water is holding birds.  Likely that lack of water is concentrating the birds too.

Went out with fellow member and got the young dog on birds. Surprised the dog did very well holding point, retrieving .

I was at the top of my honey hole draw yesterday and wish I would of brought the shotgun instead of the muzzleloader. Should be a good fall.

Well known spot number 1 had plenty of water but few birds.  Spot number 2 required hauling mucho water for the pups, but there were far more birds.

Actually he is not.  The young one is almost worthless.  He went to a local trainer that will remain unnamed for now. Luke will be reevaluated very soon and might end up being given away depending on the evaluation. He came from a very solid line, just goes to show us, lines don't always mean anything. Ace at 13 still rocks the mountains.

How old is the young dog and what line is he from. Some lines take longer to mature,they can take even longer to mature if there is heavy line breeding. Line breeding is a good thing but one thing that is often forgotten is linebreeding retards maturity rate. There are some setter lines where the dog acts like a complete ding a ling until they are 5. I prefer a quick maturing dog that acts 6 but is really only 2.

My experience too. I have had dogs take 3 to 5 years too get it. I lucked out with current dog as she is doing great. Lots of training but apparently clicked with her.

Nice work gents, we went out and did OK, had lots of opportunities but being new to the area we did more scouting than hunting during the first morning and finally connected on end of the day and following day.  Sure saw a lot of turkeys and dog found every bird.  My son killed his first Hun so I think he's hooked now!

2.5 years old. Trainer did a poor job,  hoping the next one does a better job.

That was after five hours in the hills. We had 3 more to go. The old man is 12 but still rocks it pretty good. He is semi worthless the next day, but that is expected. I will never be able to replace my first GSP ACE and all the great memories thus far!

yeah just be careful where you are heading, avoid obviously snakey looking spots and you should be alright.

Saw one Snake on Sunday at about 10:00 am. He ran from my uncle as fast as we ran from him. Then we Promptly  dispatched of him.
